Cage design/measurement tips

sorry :o

ummm, yeah, you should be able to leave the glass in.... halo style vs my style will make that easier.. but i'd say it's still doable.. obviously it could affect ease of welding, mocking up, etc...

the external.. eh, anything can be made to work... would i do it? not on a joysey street rig.... :haha:

oh, and if you go thru the dash, as opposed to in front of, it'll be hard to get much "tilt back", holes in the floor may be wanted...

Halo style would be where the A-pillars stop at the top of the windshield correct?

Yeah if I go through the dash I plan on doing the holes in the floor thing. Really dont wanna do the in front of the dash thing. Guess i could grab a piece of tube and stand it up in there and see if I really dont like it or not.

This is a trail only rig. I thought maybe the hybrid exo around the A-pillars would simplify the A-pillar design plus protect my windshield and cab with all the trees we have up here.

yes...

and understandable.... an exo is just something i've never considered so haven't contemplated much of that.. draw it up in paint! :haha:

Haha I tried last night a few times...looks like a small child drew it :doah:

Excuse the paint skills :doah:

I've got a few tips that may help...

If you leave the windshield in, cover it up from spatter...

I had quite a few small lengths that were notched and sharpied with the angle on them... That made it easy to grab them and test fit for the angle I was wanting...

Of course, level the rig first... I also used the ceiling in the garage to hang pieces in place... And I used a lot of blue masking tape to design...

These two pieces of tubing need to come together at one point:

You never want to connect a piece of tubing to an unsupported piece (i.e., always make sure the tubing is connecting at a joint, not just at a convenient piece of tube).

Also, there are potential head clearance issues with the x shape in the drawing there.

nevermind the rear portion LOL I was drawing it out and it wouldnt let me undo the whole thing. Hard to draw 3D in paint

Not sure if its just my excellent drawing or are you saying that connecting the exo A pillar cab tubes into the B-pillar tube isnt a good idea?

Are you talking about the X behind the seats or above inside the cab?

I'd say above, inside the cab. If there is any place to be careful with clearance it's there. You do not want a cage that will cave in your coconut while bouncing around! As generous as a K5 is interior wise, headroom is still an issue when adding a cage. I'd put headroom/safety well above triangulation...

the colors are horrendous, completely clashing with the green sticker on the fender.

I like this stuff. Very interesting. Even that paint monstrosity gets me thinking :)

Ok Noted. I just through that X in there figuring if I had a cross bar above the windshield and between the Cabs B pillars that connexted to the extrenal portion they would need to be braced somehow. I suppose two bars running fore to aft between the seats similar to Ryokens would provide the same effect without being too close to the noggin.

I like where this thread is going, I have been searching cage design for the last few days, and picked out ryoken, and renes cage work as my examples as well. Only difference I see is that I will be starting with a K20 Cab rather than a blazer. I think I may chop the top off right at the windshield and the bulkhead to help with the cage work. Plus I like having no top :):whistle:

LOL Did both you guys miss my A-pillar questions?

Yeah i figured I will tilt it back, or do the holes in the floor and drop it down to get those top welds inside.

Yep, missed it entirely.

Will the tubing around the windshield prevent you from removing it or changing it?

It could quite possible make it more difficult however the intention of that tubing is to extend the life of my windshield and cab :thumb:

Up here it is just a matter of time with how tight our trails are. Go to my build thread and look back one year compared to now :doah:

I dunno, but keep the ideas coming
