Can you cruise at 80+mph in your truck?

My 1990 Blazer has one ton CUCV axles with crossover steering.

K85octane has tons, crossover, and assist and his goes nice down the road. I remember watching his highway video and being extremely jealous of how well it tracked.

I can say crossover and hydro assist makes all the difference in how well they track and steer.

Its all in the tires...My 89 blazer with one tons, crossover, 5.38's, blah blah would go down the road quite rough with 15/39/15 bias ply tsl's, no where close to 80mph. Once I put on MT/R with kevlar, they go 80 no problem, nice and smooth.

I've just learned to enjoy 55 in the blazer. It feels really fast. Try taking your doors off :dunno:

What do you do about mirrors with the doors off. I did the quick release door mod to my doors but I don't want to get a ticket for no mirrors.

Yep.

For me, it's not the steering I'm afraid of if I travel 80mph. It's the engine noise, wind noise, rattles, bumps and squeaks that get tiring. Newer trucks are so quiet and smooth running, besides the steering, its almost like driving a luxury car with an open trunk in the back.

Though I could go 80+ mph in my '72 K5 after I swapped in a SM465 and kept the 3:08's in the diffs,I never liked driving it much over 65,the short wheelbase made it feel very squirrely above that speed, despite having new tires and fresh alignment...it also was scary slowing it down in a hurry above 65 mph if someone made a stupid manuver,it would sway and weave the rear end all over the place until you got it below 50 mph or so...

I did have 8.75x16.5 bias ply cooper discoverers on it and it did handle better with the old B.F. Goodrich radial TA's it had on it at higher speeds than it did with those stiff nylon coded un-poppable tank treads, but the short wheel base was its most limiting factor...the stiffer 6 ply bias tires actually made it feel more stable as far as side sway..

My '75 2wd K5 and all my 8 foot bed pickups could cruise well above 75 mph and you hardly noticed the difference between 65 mph and faster, you had to watch the speedo,or risk getting a ticket...but God help you if you needed to make a panic stop with the bed empty!...

About 20-years ago I had a 1977 C30 Dually, with a freshly rebuilt 454, T400 trans, and suspension, which could do 85 to 90 MPH on the open road for hours. That thing was a beast.

When I rebuilt the original 454 in it, I completly debured the block, balanced the rotating assembly, put 10:1 flat tops in it, an RV cam (290 degree advertised), headers, full duall exhaust, Edelelbrock manifold, carter carb, rebuilt the trans, suspension, and brakes, with a set of new 255/70/16.5 tires. This truck could could haul ass!

Out cruising

Had to go east yesterday to work on a friend's house. Ran down the 2 later at 80 to 85 the majority of the way just to see. Drove nice except for a very small tire vibration.

That thing loved high way speeds, it would burry the speedo just cruising in over drive without really pushing it.

Had it up to 105mph racing a buddy down the high way, got pretty sketchy over an over pass but I'm still young and dumb lol

Ohh and soft tops don't really care for speeds over 70 mph, they push the sides way In if the top is on.

I had a good chuckle thinking about this thread driving the crew cab this weekend. I was thinking that if it could talk my truck would tell you it goes 80 and better all the time. :rotfl: That's because the speedo hasn't been calibrated for gears and tires. :D
