Chalet's rebuild - 9/24 Tranny and t-case ready, couple newb ??'s

Took the camper to an RV shop today to have the rear door frame welded up and the entry way fiberglass and wood fixed. After thats cured i'll ask them how much to use the forklift to swap the camper over. Guess i need to head to ORD for some rear 4" flip brackets and figure out some springs....

I've got new tre's, drag link ends, and adjusting sleeves. Is there anything I need to know before I put this all together and bolt it on?

I'm just going to use the old ones as a guide to how long the new ones should be. Then once this thing is together take it over and get an alignment.

Thats a good way to get her close. After that jack up each corner and spin the wheel and use a can of white paint to put a line on the tire in the center. Before the paint dries use a nail to scrib a line in the wet paint to measure from. Measure your toe by using the line and measureing from the rear and the front to get close. After every adjustment roll her forward or backwards a tad before remeasuring.

For the camber...insist on getting as close to "spec" as possable by ordering and using spindle camber spacers. Do not use the type they will want to use which is camber sleeves used to adjust the top stud on the balljoint....believe me...they don't work well for a rig that will see more than black top.

Update: Finally got the time to finish up the front axle and bolt it up with the new springs. Still have to do most of the little stuff, but its in. Do I need to have my rear exhausts reworked? They seem a little close to the springs, but don't know if they'll stay in the same relative position as the truck flexes, or if they'll be bumping into the springs..

Also, think I'm going to ditch the front swaybar. Rough Country Springs and Ford SD shocks ought to keep the ride stiff enough that I can do without it. Right?

Going to pull the tranny Monday and get it R&R and have a shift kit installed. Then its just a matter of getting it back in and buttoning up the little details: brakes, hei, misc gaskets, alignment, etc.

That's my little brother.

I don't mean to hi-jack, but is that guy still making those grills?

Nice build by the way!!!!:bow::bow:
Don't know. I think his website is down last time I checked , but I've got his phone # at the office somewhere if you want. Real good guy to deal with.

Been a while thought I'd update. Tranny/transfercase is out. Transmission went to a local shop to correct some issues and get a shift kit. Have my rebuilt, 27 spline 205 sitting here waiting on HAD's 205 flange and a 1350 Ford Superduty cv shaft to use on the rear. Already have a new 1310 cv driveline for the front.

I put all new Felpro, rubber gaskets on the engine. Oil pan, rear and front main seals, timing cover gasket, valve cover gasket and have a new gasket for the dizzy whenever I swap. Installed a new water pump, harmonic balancer, fuel pump, and oil pump while I was at it. Eliminated some vac lines I don't need yesterday, and replaced the rest with new lines.

Thought about posting some pics, but nothing really to see as it sits. Just a matter of getting the drivetrain back together and finishing up the brakes. Mounting license plates, rewiring the taillights, etc.

Today, I put the fan and shroud back on and the fan is now hitting the top of the shroud. It didn't before I did all of this, so I'm guessing that with the tranny out, the rear of the engine is lower which is pivoting the front up and causing the problem. Think I'll leave it alone until the transmission is in and see what happens.

You would be correct in the reason why it is hitting it, mine hit the bottom of the shroud had to lower the tcase

Been a bit and I haven't taken a whole lot of pics. Got the tranny back from the shop today and did a mockup with the adapter and np205. Keep in mind I'm switching from a 203 and this tranny install is a first for me.

Couple of quick questions about the tranny.

How much fluid do you put in the torque convertor? There's still some in it and I don't know how to tell when its full.

Do I need to RTV the front of the adapter to the back of the tranny? There's no gasket there. I'm pretty sure I need to RTV the racetrack seal on the backside of the adapter to the t-case.

I know the seal from the tranny to 205's likes to leak, is this little rubber o-ring one on the shaft?

thanks in advance.

If you rebuilt the trans, Ive been told you need to use a new converter. I think you usually put about a quart in the converter, but dont quote me. If it were me, I would put rtv on both surfaces.

The tc is practically new, less than 3000 miles. It was installed when the previous shop I used that did such a crappy rebuild a couple years ago. Is there a way to flush the thing and start from scratch?

I think your right about the RTV, can't hurt.

if you can find gaskets, there should be a thick cork gasket there between the case and adapter for sure. on the trans side there should be a large Oring but rtv works good there.

What happened to require the rebuild? Someone on here JunkyK5?? is pretty knowledgable. Might start a new thread and get more opinions.

Tranny shifted and worked fine for a while after the rebuild. When I first got it back it started leaking pretty good so I crawled under it to see wtf. 2 bolts missing from the crossmember and the e-brake cable was routed over the tailhousing. Took it back, they redid it and fixed the leak. Would spring leaks occasionally and I took it back while it was under the year warranty. I got the feeling the guys didn't know what they were doing, even though they've been around here for a while.

Anyway, was driving it home from hunting a while later and the column shifter got loose. The next time I tried to drive it was stuck in 1st gear. Linkage was fine, the bracket out of the tranny wouldn't budge. I figured I might as well pull it out myself and find somebody reputable to go through it. In addition, I decided I might as well lift it and upgrade the axles and do some other crap while I had the tranny out, and about a year and half later hear I am.

When Grapevine Automatic rebuilt it, the welded the center support to the case as some lugs in there were missing. I kind of remember them mentioning it at the time, but its been a while. Wilson's, who I took it to recently, said that was the dumbest thing they'd seen and the case was toast. So I took another th350 I had here to them and they fixed it up for me. Decided to reuse the tc from previous toasted trans because I see no reason to buy another one. Wilson's agreed that made sense.

BTW, the fellas at Wilson's I got referred to by a couple different people that had used them. Been around forever and good people. Ended up only costing me $175 out the door by the time I got done. They could've hit me for a full rebuild for the 2nd one, as I picked it up used and had no idea what kind of condition it was in.

I was looking at the reman'd tc that I was going to use, and I don't trust the shop that installed it, and can't find anything on it to tell me who built it with it, so to heck with it. Didn't spend near as much getting the tranny fixed, so I ordered this today. B&M 20416 Holeshot 2000RPM flash tc from Summit.
