Chevy LS1 Engines anyone?

K5Woody,
Just a side note, not all LT1's have aluminium heads. The F-body and Vette do, but the Impala SS and the LT1 Caprice have iron heads. I agree with what you're saying about the LS1 benefiting from being all aluminium. As an option you could always have some iron LT1 heads ported when building up an LT1. A little trivia, the iron heads don't require the highre octane gas the aluminium heads due. They were developed with police duty in mind and GM realized that police stations don't fill up with the good stuff. That would probably change once you start porting the heads and messing with the compression ratio.
Neil,
Are these short blocks for $300???? Or do they need rebuilds?? For that price I might consider dropping one in my Camaro. I take it you probably work at a dealership and these are engines that are swapped under warantee, right?

It's not what you buy, it's what you build!

perfomance gains are amazing. no there not a 450 horse 383 or 450 horse 454 but you can't beat the relability and according to the guys at s&p the vettes have 300 rear wheel horses, i am personally a little skeptical of that but i know that the camaro lt-1's have 240-250 rear wheel horses and that the vettes are rated about 30 horses more so lets say that it only has 270 rear wheel horses with my msd/headers/and 52mm throttle body i should have at least 300 rear wheel horses or if you go by s&p(330-350).
and the gas milage numbers was 18/24(city/highway) mpg with the lt-1. and of cource flogging it will bring that down a little but not much.
and as to the post that ls-1's are better. that may be true but if you look in old magazines and compare the dynos of the lt-1 and the ls-1 they are very similar on where they build torque and horsepower. yes the ls-1 has more horses but it is also higher up than the lt-1's peak so it all depends on preference on that aspect. do not get me wrong though both the lt-1's and ls-1's are awsome motors. i almost bought a ls-1 from the a factory warrenty deal to build up for my chevelle but i am still working on my blazer so. and i am holding out for a ls-6 yeah baby..,..

Jason,
A couple things, remember that the 18/24MPG will be effected by the weight of a K5, tire size and gears. What tranny are you hooking the LS1 up to???? About the LS6, wouldn't that be WAY expensive?? What about building up a stroker LT1 with LT4 heads and intake. There's a dealership in FL that sells the LT4 intake and heads on ebay for $1300. I'm pretty sure that will get your Chevelle moving. IF the LT1 in my Caprice ever gives out I think that's the route I'd take. Start with the short block and stroke it to a 396 and get the LT4 parts for it. I'd have to hope that doesn't destroy the 4L60e or the rear end!

It's not what you buy, it's what you build!

they 18/24 mpg is what s&p got in there shop truck with the lt-1 and yes the ls-6 is going to be expensive, but when i looked into a stroked lt-1 to 383 with lt4/heads and intake your looking at just as much. the only places that sell lt-1 that have been beefed up with splayed maincaps and stuff like that was $3500 just for the short block after the core ouch...and as for the lt-4 heads and intake i may do that anyways but for it to truly be an lt-4 i would have to change the cam and add 1.6(they may be 1.5) roller rockers and bigger injectors which that $1300 dollars dosen't include, and if i spend the $2000 jim pace wants for their conversion then i get the hot cam which has a power band so far up that it wouldn't be usable and then i would either have to buy the accel chip and software to calibrate the computer so reallisticly a full out 383 lt-1 isn't reallistic and as for the 396 strokers they are just as expensive. even if you do the machine work yourself if you do it right blueprint balance and the whole shebang your looking at least 1500-2000 machine work( at least that is what it costs down here) so neither way is cheap...

i forgot i'm using the 700r4 . and i don't have to worry about the chevelle any time soon. i am no where near getting it drivable so something better will probalby come out before then anyways...

Jason,
Unfortunately all this stuff is expensive. Like the quote goes "speed is a function of money, how much do you want to go?" My Camaro (68 SS) is in the same boat. I need to finish up the Caprice and get the Blazer rolling before I can even think of toughing the Camaro. I've got the perfect set up for your Chevelle, how about a Ram jet 502 and a T-56 six speed!!!!!!!!!!
