Axle swap was cheaper than a gear swap.
Known a couple folks on here that did that. More ground clearance and lighter.
I wonder if the front axle was regeared or swapped or if the front driveshaft was missing?

LOL I did that with a lifted 97 ext cab, test drove it, bought it, got it home and realized it was only a 4.3 literHad a bunch of rust in one pumpkin I believe.
Had to have had lube of some kind because I picked it up in the dark in a parking lot 3 hrs from home and drive it here somehow lol.
Wasn't till morning that I even noticed the 6 lugs
I was just so excited to buy it that I gave it a glance over mad handed out cash lol.
Once the daylight came I noticed a LOT of PO hackery.
Like MANY bare hot wires hanging out under the dash and the engine bay. Not just cut, but stripped too. Body was nice, rest was a nightmare lol.
It happened to me with my 97 mercedes e300 diesel.
Who would have thought in 97 they still made non turbo diesel cars.
I didn't think of looking.
Took me a month to find out the first year they improved the heads so much they felt they didn't need the turbo.
Yeah, in late 98 they added the turbo, and that was and still is one of the best turbo diesel engines mercedes madeDon't improved heads usually equal ability for MORE turbo...

Curious - how did the sound of the 4.3 fool you?
I drove my BIL's van with the 4.3 and couldn't tell until I pulled the cover to work on it and saw it was missing 2 cylinders
sounded like a 350, wasnt lacking in power either
I had a 93 c1500 with 4.3/5 speed.
Loved that thing. Thought it was a 305 or something when I bought it. Same deal, didn't know it was a V6 until I was paying the dude and he said "that 4.3 is a great motor"
Paid him $300, drove it a few months, then gave it to my dad and he daily'd it for a couple years.

They also idled and rev’d like SBC’s since they literally started as 3/4 of a 350.
I knew a kid who was convinced his truck had a 454 because the guy who sold it to him had alluded to swapping a big block into a squarebody. His truck did have a lope at idle but it was obviously a SBC upon visual inspection.
