Well, I know atlas has been around for a while and have a lot of people backing theres up in there rig. Stak is new to the market and Is said to be very strong to handle a fullsize with guts being bigger then atlas. Excellent customer service as well. We all know about the strength and gear selection of a Doubler.

So, with all these selections of gears Do the multi speeds really have an advantage over 2 speeds??
Let me know what case you have been behind with feelings about them.

One can use the high 1:1 for sand or light trails.
Low for rocks and harder obsticles 3:1 and up.
Don't have experience with mud so not sure there.

Those with aftermarket cases, Do you really use all three or wish you had a third option if only running the two?

Thanks for any info.

I have a basic doubler in my rig. General trails, mud or racing obstacle I'll run single low (2:1) and when crawling rocks or going really slow on trails such as long steep decents I'll run double low (4:1)

A doubler will have 1:1, 2:1, 4:1. You can also modify the shift rails wich will enable you to engage the front and rear driveshaft independently. If one wanted to go all out, they could rebuild the 205 with 3:1 gears and that would yield 1:1, 3:1, and 6:1. you could do 2:1 with that but its not recommended to put the 203 gear box in low and run the 205 in high. I am getting ready for a doubler but for general trails I love having just 2:1 its got enough grunt and isnt so low you can cruise at a decent speed but I really wish I had more grunt when crawling

If I could go back, I'd go with an Atlas4 with the 10.34 lo lo. But I chose a 203/LoMax doubler. So it's 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 6:1. I think I'll have enough grunt even with a mild SBC. For mud, you're looking at a 2:1 or numerically lower ratio. It's all about preference I guess, and what ratios you plan to use.

I'm just wondering why you're not supposed to use the 2:1 in the 203??

The idea is to have the reduction as far downstream in the drivetrain as possible. If you want to be in 2:1 they recommend you shift the 205 into low range because that's likely the strongest part of the doubler (its possible that people could have a 10 spline connection between the 203/205).

IMO it shouldn't really matter.

I have a doubler and use 4:1 almost exclusivly in the buggy unless I want to go fast then I use 1:1.

The only reason I don't use 2:1 gearing in the t-case is that I have a manual valve body tranny and my second gear 4:1 is about the same as 1st gear 2:1.

If I didn't have the manual VB in the tranny I would switch back and forth from 4:1 to 2:1 alot.

There are really two reasons to use the 205 in low range and the 203 in high if you want the 2:1 gear.

The 203 shifts about 9,000 times easier than the 205.

The other is that the way the numbers work out for the engineering types the shaft connecting the 203 to the 205 is the "weak" link in the system. Now that all the major Doubler producers are using a billet heat treated mainshaft it probably is not an issue with which case is in low and which is in high. The only doubler shafts that I have ever heard from were early designs that were not heat treated or were resplined stock shafts. I have yet to get a report of a "new" billet shaft being an issue.

I have wheeled with several rigs that have the old Wagner machine 3:1 kit in their doubler and have heavy right feet. They are all still running and holding together just fine.

I see all with the doubler and I just am more curious about atlas and stak cases.
The doubler is not the way I am going for different reasons.

STaK is the shizzzznit..!!!!!!!

Excellent product and Good Guys to deal w/... :waytogo:

Marv

So how can you back your opinion up?? Do you know first hand that it is excellent? I do believe you, it is a great product don't get me wrong. And definite awesome customer service.
Thanks for any info.

He installed a stak 3 spd in his brothers TJ that he linked, extended, full width'ed, caged, lifted, etc. He also just bought another stak for his buggy. He delt with customer service on his brother's case. He had some questions about how tight everything in the case was. He can go into detail.

He has also had an atlas for a project.

wow thats a damn good explanation to support a product. To get two as well.
Great then he can tell me more about what he thinks about the 2 and 3 speed options.
Yes I need detail.

Thanks Harley

I believe the STaK gives you better gearing options. depending on how a motor is built and what kind of wheeling you do would dictate your overall gear choice. typically if you have a high HP and like to a lot of sand hill climbs and overall trail ride people choose the 2.0/3.75. The hardcore rock crawlers will typically take the 3.0/5.44. and the average guy that likes to trail ride and occasionally likes to hit the harder trails will go with the 2.5/4.33. Me personally, I am going with the 5.44 option. I have the doubler in my truck now and I love it and have had no problem what so ever, but I would like more gear. I have 4.56 in the axle and don't want to change that. the kind of wheeling I do i never have it in 2 to 1 so with the 5.44 i will have 1 number lower in each gear.

The atlas is a good product as well but I feel the gear options are a little redundant. they have 1:2.72:3.8:and 10.3 to 1. I know for a fact that even 5.44 to one in an auto is hard to stop, I can only imagine what 10:1 would be like.

Do you know first hand that it is excellent?

Sorry Chevysmith,

I was short on time when I typed that response.

Harley's right.

I built a TJ last year and used a 3 speed Monster Box. After driving it I really started to like the case. Front Dig, cool ratios, and outstanding workmanship are a few plusses when you buy the STaK. Everybody who crawls under it goes "ooooooooo...." when they see it! :D And although I don't think this justifies buying it - it IS an attractive piece. Also the point that Danny makes about the available ratios is a benefit too. In this case, the owner wanted a "higher" gear ratio for the 1st low range [stock was 2.72 in a NP231] and a lower "crawl gear" for slow stuff. Ultimately we chose the 2.4/4.3 combination and it works great!

Here's the b4 and after for the TJ:

I am running an Atlas mine. It's 4.3 Atlas II. I love it and the case seems to work very well and stand up to my abuse with the 42's and the FI 350. I had some problems with my front driveline angle, because I clocked it close to flat and I have 6" of lift up front, so I add a 241 doubler to increase the front shaft length and reduce the operating angle at the front output joint.

I have used it(with the doubler) harshly on 4 runs now with no issues even in LOW LOW. These are the available ratios with my setup:

1:1
2.72:1
4.3:1
and
11.7:1 = crazy too low

And since we're posting pictures:D:

No Appalogies neccesary Marv.
Great guys these are the excellent answers I was hoping for. Now for the decision of wich one to get.

Great looking rigs. Kinda funny next to an old model T.
DPI, how do you keep your body sooo clean? Blazer I mean.

Well the decision is made.I'm soo STAKed.....
