Who all would be interested in a 3 day trip on the Rubicon Trail in August of 2014? I've run it once with Colby last August and this trip was absolutely hands down worth every last minute of the 1750 mile drive to get there :waytogo:

Rig requirements depend on how much sheet metal damage you are OK with. 37s and lockers = no body damage, 33s and open diffs = much carnage :haha:You'd need recovery points, straps, camping gear, cooking gear and some form of communications equipment (CB or HAM radios). Make sure your truck is reliable and well maintained. Breakage happens (bring spare parts please!) but hauling someone's broken truck off the trail would not be very easy so do your maintenance at home before you come.

The plan would be to meet up in South Lake Tahoe to buy groceries and get organized. Hit the trail first thing in the morning and wheel up to one of the lakes and make camp. Spend the next day swimming, hiking and relaxing in the gorgeous Sierra Nevadas. The last day we can finish wheeling the trail and begin our journey home.

This trip can be open to any type of rig. I'll probably have a number of Jeeps follow me down from Alberta. Full bodied or full tube chassis rigs are welcome!

Who's interested?! :thumb::pimp:

I'm in. And, I suggest that we do the trail the reverse of what we did in 2012 - meaning that we start in Tahoma, CA and end at Loon Lake, CA. That's what I did this year, and I really liked that direction a lot. Going up Big Sluice was a lot of fun!

The caveat is that my life will see a TON of changes next August - so I'll make every effort to go, but there's a chance I won't be available at that time. My preference would be to do a M-W trip, or T-R. Weekends would suck in August, as the traffic would be SO heavy.

Yup, definitely be a mid-week trip. The trails around here are the same way with being quiet during the week and mega busy on the weekends.

If it suits you better, prehaps we should do the run earlier, say in mid July?

I'll probably be teaching a summer mini-semester till July 18 or so. As such, I could almost guarantee that I'll be available the following week. I figured your timing had to do with the Vegas to Reno race.

The thing for me and my schedule next year is that I graduate my masters program in May, then teach that summer mini-semester - and then real life hits, meaning I have to get work. I have some plans to get into NV politics at that time - so we'll see how that goes. The other thing I'm trying to work into my plans is an extended trip to Norway to see my Wife's heritage (Her grandparents fled here from the Nazis, and her dad lived there a couple years as a small child), and Blazer Bash (Although BB doesn't really affect the Rubicon plan).

Anyway, that's enough of my saga. But, it is why it's a bit hard for me to make plans for late next summer. But! I live only an hour and a half from the Tahoma trailhead, so that makes it easier for me than most!

I'd be all over this except I'm putting together a Dusy Ershim run for August. 2014.... Bummer

Dusy Ershim is about 4 hours south of the Rubicon in identical terrain. Near courtwright reservoir/ Shaver Lake, CA. However the main differences is that rubicon is 12 miles, the Dusy is 33 miles and slightly tighter. Fullsize rigs can do it but its tight there are a couple trees exactly 88" apart with no go around. It's possibly the most scenic trail in the sierra mtns.

Interesting! I'll have to look into that. How many days do you usually take to do it?

And, I know this is splitting hairs, but to the best of my knowledge, if you take the Loon Lake-Tahoma route on the Rubicon, it is 18 miles. As you probably know, the trail technically goes from Georgetown, CA to Tahoma, and is closer to 30 miles. NorCal_Chris can speak better than I to the section between Georgetown and the location where the Loon Lake route meets up with the Rubicon, but as I understand it, this section isn't as challenging as the route between Loon and Tahoma.

I want in

I would love to run the rubicon , It has Ben a dream of mine for years . I'll be in if at all possibile we can plan to run it on the weekend so I don't mis a full week from work . Another plus is I've never gone to ca before , do you think thay will let a coal rollen cummins past the state line ?:dunno:

is it even possible for a full bodied suburban on 37s with just a rear locker to run the rubicon?

a long rig will be a challenge. There's some tight spots for sure, but I think it'd be doable. Russell and I both went through without a scratch, though we're both obviously shorter wheel base. Sliders would be a must-have, tho.

hmmm, ive always wanted to run the rubicon, i'd hate to be the trail tampon of the group though.

I put a dent in one box side when my swing out tire carrier got away from me, but otherwise no damage at all running the rubicon. I wouldn't think there would be more than one or two places where a Suburban wouldn't be able to go without any trouble. I did loose a locking hub due to some poorly sized snap rings, but a fella on a side by side found it and gave it back to me shortly after we realized it was missing :P But that is beside the point :P

I think a mid week trip would be the best way to go. Weekends on the rubicon trail are nuts. The dates are flexible at this point. I doubt the race team is going to run Vegas 2 Reno again becuase it does not count for points in the Ultra4 series and was more of a just to say we did it kind of a thing...

I'd run the Rubicon in January, if ya'll wanted? I love winter wheeling :D

I love it too, but I don't love snow covered side-hills on the edge of cliffs.... :yikes:
