Cleaning Aluminum manifolds...

Do not use oven cleaner it will eat the aluminum:eek1:

Well, yeah... if you leave it on for days at a time. Otherwise, it's no more harsh than that Eagle 1 stuff.

The stuff I tried, "Easy-Off", was. Etched the carefully grained aluminum in less than an hour. Ended up having to paint it.
The mag wheel cleaner worked much better for me. It is important that you use the cleaner meant for non clear-coated wheels as the formula is considerably different.

I used Easy off oven cleaner on my bearing retainers on my np205. let is sit for less than 25 mins and it was allready eating the aluminum.

25 mins was 15 mins too long, especially if you are just degreasing. For that, just plain old mineral spirits and bristle brush work fine.

And obviously you can't use oven cleaner on a clear-coated surface. But we're not talking about wheels, here. We're talking about an intake manifold. Baked on grease and crud over oxidized aluminum. Oven cleaner will take off all of the crud and oxidization and then you clean it real good with soap and water and then paint it with engine paint (color or clear).

good question!!

:haha: :haha:

BTW--its "Wipe",not Whipe!..:p:

I didn't use it on a clear coated surface. I used it on a raw sheet aluminum carb heat isolator plate that I made from some hiway sign mat'l (friend used to be in the biz of making those signs - mat'l was cheep).
Obviously I left it on too long, but it had still not gotten all the crud loose.
The wheel cleaner will also take off the oxidation, but is less aggressive against the bare alumium so you have some control over the process.

Paint????? People have been using it for years. Cheap to do and looks way better than bare unpolished aluminum. Easy to clean too.
