14bolt 3/4 8lug.... 35' tires and np203 part time kit.

Always made a bit of a clunk going into reverse. But the last two outings it seems to be worsening..

The truck has newish driveshaft and Ujoints about 250 miles city driving on them.

I put truck in neutral and chalked it, and filmed the play in the rear driveshaft by turning it by hand. Also the clunk when putting in gear while running.

Zoom into the muffler and watch the sticker on the drive shaft. You'll see it it move with the clunk.

I have video, hopefully it play.

@Wes Harden says rebuild or go 14ff...

How difficult is it to rebuild this?
Cost for a shop?

No locker Im aware of. I've never pulled the differential cover since I've had the truck

Can ya’ pull the cover and take a pic of the diff ?
Also, if you can disconnect the driveshaft at the axle yoke and get the rear wheels off the ground so there is no tension on the ring and pinion and try and see if there is any “in and out” movement of the yoke. This would indicate bearing issues and help pin point the reason for the slop.

How many quarts for the 14b differential
What makes you say this, curious. If it was 10 bolt yeah I believe it, 14b not so much.
I was assuming it didn’t have a D/L and was thinking back on reasons on past 14FF’s that had excessive slop and found several of the three-crossed pin G/L’s that had broken internals but were contained within the diff and still somewhat worked.
Nowhere near as bad as a 10-bolt G/L but have seen too many 14-FF G/L’s fail to not warrant a look. A lot of slop was always present when one was about to give it up.
may not be in this case - just thinking of ways to help narrow things down.

I have yet to be in 14b gov loc so good to know, I havn't been i a 10b gov loc either they just get chucked. I should have autopsied it oh well live and learn.

It could be all good - if there is ANY chance of a G80 surviving it will be in a semi-inclosed 14-FF diff.
the internals are pretty good size compared to other GM G/L’s.
Not a bad set up - just reason for suspect when there is excessive slop in one.

It's not a G/L. Slow down on rocking the pinion, remember when you go back and forth like that you're getting all the "slop" from the ring & pinion and axle splines. Grab the yoke and softly feel for the minimum amount of slop without moving the carrier, this will be the ring & pinion only.

Ok.... it's minimal if any doing how you suggest
. I'm thinking it's the 203... been texting @Wes Harden all day. Thinking the diff is fine
