colbystephens' '73 blazer build!

So who has built his own steering brace? I don't want to fork out the coin for ORD's kit, and it looks fairly simple anyway. Anyone have ideas on how to build one? Got pics of what you've done? Do you wish it were beefier? How?

Well, it just goes to that central hole in the front crossmember there and the two rear bolts for the steering box. Just gotta get the angles and lengths right. Bit more to it than that but the basics are there.

If you search I put some pictures up and ranted a bit when I did mine a year or so ago.

I built my own brace, just based it off ORD's used some tube I had laying around and some scrap plate. I put some lenghts of tube about an inch and a half long on the back 2 bolts, then a longer "spacer" to a hole in the cross member then just did a trial and error sort of thing to get a piece of 1/4 inch plate I had laying around to span the three bolts. I think I did the same sort of thing for the front top bolt as ORD does as well, can't remember though its been quite some time. And no I don't have pictures, I can grab some when I go home for spring break, its going to be a while though

mine was kind of out there, mainly just to spread the load on the frame and tie it into the crossmember

Well, i'm trying to finish up the structural components of my fuel tank tunnel today. had a little surprise tho. i was working with the grinder and had it kick back in a way i've not dealt with before.

i almost cut off my wang. :yikes:

it kicked back into my coveralls at wang height. i fortunately was wearing slightly baggy cover alls and the blade wound up in the fabric and stopped the motor instead of slicing through to Private Stephens or the Great God of Testiclese. :haha:

Progress pictures of the tunnel later today. :D

BE CAREFUL! They are not for SHOW for a few more years!

:haha::haha::haha:

Here's the progress I made over the last couple of days.

Next step is to go to the auto parts store and pick up a radiator hose with a nice tight 90* bend in it to route the fuel filler neck. I'm going to have it pop up and out of the back of the box on the right upper corner. It will have enough help from gravity to get the fuel into the tank, but should still be short and sleek enough to not get in the way of cargo too much.

i've been debating on what to use for the lid. Originally I wanted to cut the floor out in such a way that I could use that piece as the lid and secure it using self tapping metal screws. I messed up the cut on the floor, though, and it's about an inch short in length.

I think a nicer option would be for me to go get a piece of plate like I have used for the walls and put it on top so that it bolts down. I'll add a bit of cross bracing with some angle iron to give it the rigidity that i would have otherwise had with the stamped steel floor. I used 1/16" thick steel for the walls. It's a bit overkill, but I want this tunnel to take ALOT of abuse and not crumple into the fuel tank.

I'm not really gaining any weight with this set up because the extra steel i'm adding in is equal to or less than the weight of the steel i removed in the front cross member. The loss of the front cross member strength is made up for by the fact that the roll cage is solid mounted to the frame near that point.

The plan is to use some seam sealer to fill the gaps between the bottom of the box and the floor created by the stamped floor planel, and I have some herculiner left over, so I'll use that to coat this tunnel. Should look pretty nice when it's all said and done.

That reminds me of the time that I was using a wire wheel on my grinder. The wheel grabbed the cored and it wound round and round throwing the plug end til it stopped quite abruptly on my johnson. I was actually laughing out myself throughout the pain.

thanks. i'll take a gander and see if i can find the thread. :thumb:

i'll be building this over spring break, along with a small list of other projects - so when you go on break, it would be great if you could snap some pics. this is on the bottom of my spring break list, so i'll probably start on it later in the week, which should give you some time to lieserly get the pic! :haha:

thanks. i like that one. might have to incorporate some tube into mine as well...

I think I will be heading home on the 27th for a long weekend so I can snap a quick picture for you then. Its not much to look at if I remember right, I built it when I was first learning to weld

That's too close. Your junk almost killed your junk. I would give it a stern talking to, your truck junk that is.:wink1:
