colbystephens' '73 blazer build!

I'm not sure what the wire size is in the Hobart at the school. It's running a 75/25 mix. Wire looks to be around .030 or .035. I have 75/25 in the tank at home and run .035 wire through my miller and it makes beautiful beads.

to my knowledge, the welder at school is on a dedicated circuit, but I'm not certain - the compressor room is right behind it.

Well, got some parts from DIY4x for the armor build. :D

I'm excited... kinda. I spent my tubing allowance on the winch which I've cleaned up real nice since this pic.

I also finished my fuel tank cover, but don't have any pics of it yet.

yep. basically modeling it after the Blazenoffroad carriers, with a couple tweaks for my own preferences. :D

Colby that is an awesome blazer. You are an inspiration to all us beginners...

lookin good Colby I like this build.

could ya list all of the mods in your sig?:haha: I know theres stuff I want to go back and look at again but I keep forgetting what they are.
That would be a long sig LMAO.

not a real fan of huge long sigs... :D

Quick recap:

It was originally an '83 Blazer with 6.2/700/208/10bolts. I rebuilt the engine, 4" all spring Pro-comp lift. Rancho RS5000 shocks (DO NOT GET SHOCKS DESIGNED FOR A LIFT OF A PARTICULAR HEIGHT! I DID AND I REGRET IT!!). Did the 3/4 ton thing - Dana44 front. Had it on 35's.

I killed the 700r4 by not having the kick down cable set properly. Swapped in a 465/205, manual clutch linkage. Supersize75k5 helped me cut out the rockers and install 2x4 rect. tubing. I added a Detroit to the rear.

Got sick of all the rust on my '83, so I bought a '73 body for $150 that was nearly rust free. Cut out the rocker boxes, cut the body up about 5" from the original height. Welded in 2x4 steel tube for rockers. Hit most of the rust prone spots w/ POR-15. Herc'd the entire interior. Built a roll cage. Permanent soft top, supported by the cage. Cheapo Summit racing seats, 5 pt harnesses. Put it on 38's.

Cut out the rear floor, raised the fuel tank up to the top of the frame to make it flush with the bottom of the frame. (31 gallon tank). Built a cover that has mounts for my batteries, Hi-Lift, and lift-base.

Still to do: Bumpers, extend slider armor over wheel wells, mount winch, build shock hoops to replace those damn RS5000 w/ Bilstein 5150's. :D

I think that's it. :doah:

You'll think of more to do. :deal: :D

Very interested to see how that comes out. :waytogo: Is it gonna be like a partial exo cage? I've been trying to think up something along those lines, but I don't like any of my ideas. :doah:

I'd like to think that it will be very little tube, and not give the impression of an exocage - but we'll see. I'd like to think of it as more an extension of the sliders. I'll post a pic of someone else who telepathically stole my idea for the rear of his truck. :wink1: it was dude from wyoming with that kick ass first gen that he's now replacing with an s10... his username escapes me at the moment.

dude your blazer is sick. i love the green and the stance it has. nice work

Thanks. ;)

I've messed with that quite a bit on this Hobart and it doesn't seem to help much. It's definitely got some issues aside from my techniques. Part of the issue, I'm sure, is that I'm used to using a new and very well taken-care-of Miller at home - so using an abused old Hobart is not my cup of tea. I've decided that I'll just use it to tack stuff together and then bring my work home to finish on my Miller...

People always have their own prefrences, ESPECIALLY when it comes to welders. I have a miller trailblazer 302 and a few old lincon redface (pipeliners) and a diesel lincon 350 While not exaclty in the same class the miller will out weld all the rest.

I also have a hobart handler 140 mig. I HATE IT! My cousins miller mig, (dunno what model it is) is a million times better welder. I just dont even like trying to weld with my hobart I tried everything even converted it to gas sheilding instead of flux core and its still just yuck.

Theres a TON of things that can cause kicking... tweaked liner, whip isn't straight while welding, dirty or warped tip, loose tip, dirty wire (always use a wire wiper), bare wires, bad ground, heat and wire settings, dirty metal, and the list goes on.

Sometimes it's just the machine though.

By the way your truck is looking great !

Holy Crap Colby! this biuld is insane! i just sat down with my last 2 hours at work and read your whole build up! freakin sweet. i just got ahold of my toy and i can say i've gotten alot of inspiration from you! sweetness man look forward to seeing more.

I too have been watching your build with interest. All of the great pics with everything torn down. Were you able to get the '83 cluster installed into the '73 with little trouble? Or were you able to salvage that portion of your original? Or did you just go with the '73 cluster?

I must have missed the post about what color you used somewhere in the last 40 pages of reading. I'd like to paint mine a similar, stock'ish color.
