colbystephens' '73 blazer build!

I'm not sure how I missed this thread, but now I'm scribed. Looks nice. I'm curious about your soft door Idea too.

bigjbear - thanks!! :D

79bruiser - i'm thinking i'm going to start framing them this month - the rod to build them can't be that expensive... it'll be a good cheap project to work on while i'm saving for the die for the bender. :D

onetonbb74 - i started mounting it today. it comes with a small plate of the same thickness as the rest of the bender which you are supposed to mount to something else. i decided to weld the nuts/washers to that plate and then mount it to the end of a 2x4 piece of tube i had laying around. the nuts are now inside the tube and it's all welded up nice an' strong. i still need to weld a plate, which i did build today, to the bottom of the 2x4. i poured a bit of concrete in my yard under my canvas car-port and sank some studs into it so that the bender can be locked up in the garage when not in use, but it provides all the covered space i might need for bending a long piece of tube. ;)

Nice, I did the same thing with the welded nut on the backside of the plate when we mounted my buddies. I still cant believe the price of those dies.

Mine were bent with one of the cheep little HF benders. The fabric is secured with velcro along the edges and snaps at the corners. The hinges are the upsidedown "L"s and the small tubes hold the upper pannels in place.

Now that I've got the pics up they don't show the detail like I thought they would.

Lets try again, the two with the rust are the hinges and the one pointing the other way is for a strap that keeps it from opening too far.

Here is the small tube a the upper slides into.

The Latch. It engages a "U" shaped striker that I tacked onto the door jamb. This is the one thing I do not like about them They need a better latch/striker combo. When I swap them onto the '80 I'm going to up grade this. I'll probably look for something off a TJ door.

Is there a window in your soft doors, or is it a half door? Do they flap alot while driving?

Thanks, Bruiser

Yes there is a window. They are in the style of a Jeep door where the top & bottom separate. See post #90.

Colby if you need a clearer pic of anything let me know. I've still got them sitting out.

ok, so i decided to go with a 1.75" die for my bender. 1.75" tube will save me significant weight compared to the 2" tube and even more cash! the 1.75" tube is like $3.09/ft as opposed to the 2" which is $4.90 or something like that.

anyway, i'm ordering it now... so if anyone has any objections... POST UP!!

got the bender all finished up and ready to go... just waiting on the die set now. should arrive late this week. perhaps i'll pick up a stick of DOM the following week and get started. dunno yet. i also gotta order some plates and gussets from DIY4x.

i put 150# of concrete down in the form, sank 4 studs which i welded to a piece of metal (which is obviously then also sunk into the concrete). the idea was to keep the studs from moving while the concrete moved, except i used sheet metal that warped during welding (shoulda used a plate) and so i had to leave the top plate on while it dried. i was able to remove the top plate and then weld it to the stand after the concrete dried. painted it black... it's easy to install/move. i have the concrete out under my portable car port so that i stay dry while working on the cage, but there's plenty of space to bend a long stick. my garage wouldn't have allowed for that space with the '73 in there.
