haha I completely forgot about that...lol its late guys...

Do those haynes manuals show wiring or are they only repair? Might be a worthy investment...
 
they show some wiring, but there's not much for the diesel harness. i've got it all figured out except for a couple things. just gotta get my column put back together and installed, install the starter, seats and new tailgate and i'll be done.
 
ok, so i'm reassembling my steering column. i don't have a lockplate remover/installer tool. i got it apart using a screwdriver and a pick. is there any reasonable way to reinstall the lock ring without that tool? do i need a new lockring? i'm getting a bit irritated with it. :o

otherwise, progress is great! i got some sweet new seats from a ck5er, as well as a not-so rusty tailgate. :D i'll post up some pics when i'm more done. :wink1:
 
Colby, as far as the lockring itself, if it looks wore out, then I'd replace it, otherwise, throw the old one back on.

What I have done before is (takes two people) one person pushes in on the lockplate with 2 screwdrivers (2 of something, 1 on each side) and the other person pushes the lockring back into place.
 
hmmm. that wasnt working for me. maybe i'll just buy the tool. should make it easier, i suppose. :)

I am not much help with most of your wiring questions, but that vacuum switch on mine is used for the cruise control system. It is used to cancel the cruise on the older systems. It is the only part on mine that I have been able to determine is faulty. I have ordered the new switch to get it replaced then I can try working out what else is faulty. Not sure if yours would require it or not, since yours has the newer VSS, mine has the older system with the speedo cable running through a box on the fender.

that totally makes sense! thanks! i think the reason my cruise stopped working was because i found a short in the wiring. however, what you're telling me is very helpful because i was wondering what the vacuum line was that hooks up to the brake system. :)
 
well, i'm still working on my project. got a lot to do still. i really just want my truck back up on the road. :doah:

anyway, i started building my locking center console and am almost done - just gotta drill a hole in the bottom for the wiring to go through and then install it into the truck! :D

what you can see is the back side of the console. on the front of the box on the right, there are 3 switches and a hole for my CB mic to come through. i'll be adding more switches as needed. they've got a nice little green light on them, which is nice so i don't forget that i've got my reverse lights on or something like that!
 
ok, so i got the center console installed and wired up. now i gotta wire the switches to the actual accessories. i like the switches tho - they have a nice little green light so you know they're on, but aren't super bright so that they'll bug you at nite. i'll snap a nite shot later. :)

i also picked up a headlight relay kit today too. :D $20 at the parts store, has everything i need. i'm going to wire it up before i get the truck on the road again.

in addition, i fixed my passenger side ball joint issues, installed my new driver's side seat and completely rebuilt my steering column today! i guess i accomplished more than i thought i'd done.... i was feeling discouraged, but after typing this, i'm feeling pretty good. :)

anyway, school me on line locks! i went to go buy one today so that i can have a parking brake on the trail - so i don't have to shut my rig down and leave it in gear every time i want to hop out. the dude said that i shouldn't leave it on for more than 2 minutes or so, because it would burn up the solenoid due to all the pressure in the system. someone tell me realistically how long i can leave it on, please. i can see myself wanting to jump out for about 5 min or so every once and a while to walk around a bit. any longer than 5 min, i probably would be on flat ground or i'd just shut it off. thoughts?
 
Electric line locks I dont know about but I remember several old 2 ton trucks I drove in the past. They had mechanical line locks, with a lever, I dont know if they still make them Im sure they do somewhere. Thats what those trucks used as a parking brake. You simply pushed the brake pedal and flipped the lever to lock it. I belive they only locked the rear brakes but i could be wrong.

here's something i accomplished today! i installed my grille again and added 3 aux. headlights. :D :D :D

night shots later... i hope they aren't too obstructed by the grille. these are the work lights that are on the sides of semi's. :)
 
they're not that hot. :) they have a rubber casing around them, and that is the only part that actually touches the grille. night pics on the way!!
