colbystephens' build and wheelin' thread! Post 289: my NEW truck body!!!

Wow, nice one on the cleanup. Looks about right if people have been going out there forever, there are more than a few places on this side of the river where there are dumped vehicles are parties regularly

As soon as I get my carb taken care of I'll be out there... :D

I do not think you owe anyone an apology. i read what you wrote three times and i do not think you said anything wrong. i think you did a stand up thing.
everyone should do their part if and when they can. either when you wheel or when you are able to make it to a trail ride/cleanup trip.
Kudos colby. :waytogo:
well, i re-read my post and edited it to make it softer because when i did write it, i was a bit fired up, and it did look like i was condemning anyone who wasn't constantly making a huge effort. the truth is that people do have alot of stuff going on in their lives, and the idea i wanted to share was that i would like to see more people making an effort and being active - even if that simply means picking up trash EVERY time they're out on a trail.

even that is an effective aid towards a solution. there's no reason we can't bring trash bags and cart out at least a bag full of trash everytime we're out... we drive fullsize rigs!

i've driven by piles of trash while wheeling and not done anything about it - and that's why i came up with my new motto. if i'm not helping solve the problem at every opportunity (and for some that means only those few opportunities they have to get out and wheel), then i'm adding to the problem because i'm using the land but not giving back.

nice job colby...would have been fun to make it buy my rig is still waiting for a carb!! plus I think a trip to the portland area would be to costly any way...but definately gives me the notion to do the same in southern Oregon. I think your criticism was a little harsh...not doing anything about a child molestor is part of the problem...if you KNOW someone is doin that wouldn't you stop them at all costs?? I would...same for the trash..you can see it so you know it's happenin...grab your bag and pick it up or if you see someone dumpin say somethin...
anyway...great job and you should get recognition!!

rear hitch is basically done. i gotta add a tube bumper to it now. don't know if i like it tho... i might totally redo it for the new body. we'll see. i'm thinking of putting in LED reverse lights instead of these bug-eyes. :D

Hey Colby,

Do you have the pics of the install of the rock sliders, i want to do that to my truck and i thought i rember all kinds of pics that you took

Also, great job cleanin up the trails, thats what keeps em open

let's talk about welding!

ok, so i'm going to be doing similar sliders to what i have now on the new body. i just ordered a millermatic 212 today ( :D ) and so i want to start planning the welding process. i'll use a 2x4 tube - probably .125 wall(?). what's the best speed/heat to use with this welder to weld it to the sheet metal? should i use .030 or .035 wire? probably the .030....

tips??

Weldng

I used .030 wire through .035 tips with Argon gas. That was for Floor panels, fenders and such. I know probably not the best thing to do but for some reason the wire would get hung up and not want to feed through the .030 tip after a bit of welding (I was keeping the tip as clean as you can, also).. I am new to welding but that seemed to work for me.. I thought I saw somewhere about another guy welding in the forum and what he used for wire and gas.. It might be n my thread but I cant remember at the moment...

EDIT: Found it. this is the setup this other guy was using for sheet metal. "I am using a hobart 135, 75%,25% Argon, C02 mix with .023 wire. the best setup i have found for welding sheetmetal". Hope that helps...By the way the rig looks great...:waytogo:

hehe that would be me.

Colby, for welding 1/8 to say 18gauge, I would run an .030 wire and tip, Mess around with it first on some material the same thinckness of the tube! Remember, your technique will be different than 99.9% of people out there. That means your settings will be slightly different. I am not familiar at all with that millermatic, so i cant even tell you a base to start from. Anyways, when you start running good beads on scrap 1/8 inch stuff, and feel comfortable welding your project, be sure to aim the wire for the Most part at the 1/8 inch. let the puddle "flow" so to say onto the sheetmetal. Hope this helps!

i didn't understand that... can you rephrase it?
ok, when you are welding the tube to the sheetmetal, don't aim the wire in the middle, between the sheetmetal and tube, aim it more towards the tube, and if you get everything set up right, your puddle will build, and hit the sheetmetal. that make it any better? :haha:

Yep, when I'm welding thick to thin, I usually dwell longer onto the thick material, then sweep up onto the thin real quick, just to spread the puddle a bit. Don't linger on the sheetmetal too long though, or you'll blow through. And if you turn the heat down so far that it doesn't blow through the sheetmetal, then you won't be penetrating the tube anymore. So you just have to turn it up just a bit, and be careful where the tip spends it's time.

Colby what do you normally do "C's", "8's", etc.? Whenever I weld thick to thin I did C's and like everyone has been saying concentrated most of my time on the thick material and then just let the tip of the C penetrate into the thin material...

I've always thought welding was one of the hardest things to explain to people online...its so much easier in person so as suggested I'd just mess around on some scraps of similar guage to what you'll be working on...

i'm more of a circle kinda guy. good tips, guys. guess i'll just brush the edge of my circle against the sheet metal and see how it goes. fortunately, i've got plenty o' scrap. :)

Let me know when you and if you do the garage build/cleanup...you supply the beer I'll drive up and supply the manpower!!

you might have to let me use that sweet welder though!! nice buy!
