colbystephens' build and wheelin' thread! Post 289: my NEW truck body!!!

i'm thinking i'm going to go to a liquidator store and pick up some used warehouse shelving - like they've got in home depot! :D

renting that house. we're pretty stoked about it... we've had housemates for the last year which has really not been a good thing for growing as a couple!

my plan is to, like stated above, head to the liquidator down the street to get some industrial shelving for the garage. i was thinking about picking some of it up to modify and weld together a stand for the new truck body to sit on for work purposes. :)

no kidding! i was living in an apartment when i first started rebuilding my truck. i had my truck an hour's drive away in my grandpa's shop... gas was not much more than $2/gal at the time, and i still thought it was too damn expensive! did that for a year.

then we moved to our current house where i've got a 3/4 size garage/workspace. if i pull my truck in, there's about 6" on every side of the truck. it's made a good workshop, but i've still had to be outside to do any truck project.

now we're moving to a place where i can have my truck body project in the garage and still have space to pull in another little car to work on it - or even put my engine bay in the garage to keep dry while doing an oil change or something. :) killer stuff.

jek has a good thread about building work benches over in the tools section. Lots of good info over there.

Looking good dood :D

If you need muscle hit me up... I'm not working MWF right now 'cause of school.

so when i turn left and i'm accelerating my fan hits the shroud. when i straighten out, it continues to hit the fan (only usually at high rpm's) until i turn the wheel to the right a bit. i was thinking cracked frame - but i looked and didn't see anything.

what are the chances that it's bad body mounts on the front end? could that cause the problem? i've been considering taking off my fan shroud, now that it's cold, to avoid the noise till i figure the problem out... but i'm afraid i'll forget to figure out the problem once the noise is gone.

any ideas??

How much clearance does the fan have to the shroud (when shut off)?

does the fan hit at the top of the shroud? if so it could very well be bady mounts.

Check your motor mounts if the fan hits the bottom of the shroud. My truck used to have the harmonic balancer rubbing the crossmember when ever I steered it right, or had it flexed out. If I would have had a fan shroud, it would have been rubbing like crazy.

It sounds like its the motor mount. You can check it by keeping your foot on the brake, and reving the motor alitle while in drive. You will see the motor jump on one side. If you keep the hood open you should be able to see it from the drivers seat.

great tip - except one problemo - i got the manual tranny. does it have to be in gear? could i check the motor mount by putting a jack under the oil pan and seeing if the engine will move with respect to the frame? can a motor mount be simply purchased at an auto parts store? by mount, you're probably not referring to the metal part, but the rubber/polyurethane/whatever component of it... right?

i don't have internet at the house anymore... so it makes my responses a bit slower. :)

Hi Colby!

you can get the motor mount at NAPA or someplace like that - they come as a unit, one part metal, the other part rubber, bonded together.. a new one should last you a very long time.. I'd change both while you are down there.

you can check with a jack to see if it's bad, and you could see what happens if you push in the clutch pedal and goose the engine.. I would think you could see movement then too..

Word of advice, if you're going to go with poly mounts for the engine or trans then all the mounts should be poly.

Off Road Design sells some nice engine mounts. They're on the "some day" list for Big Ugly.

good tip. i didn't know that. why is that the case?

i'm going to do some major inspection on my truck this evening when i get home. if i need new mounts, i'll probably go with diy4x. :)
