Cold air intake....

Ive been looking for the right cold air intake system to put on my 87 K5, TBI. Maybe Im not looking in the right places but it seems like all the after market companies make systems for every year but 87. Dose anyone have any suggestions, possibly modifications to whats out there for other years. :thinking:
 
i'm pretty dang sure you can get one for a 92-97 (i think those are the years) chevy, anything with the 350 tbi is gonna work i would imagine, i've been thinking about buying one for my 83 because i know i can get it to fit. But then i think it would be cheaper to build one, and make it a dual inlet. so i think im'ma just build one.
 
Maybe they don't make them because it's already a cold air system?

It probably depends if you are talking about something like a fording kit, or??

So do you mean your macking something like the V6 87 camaro has?
 
One thing to bear in mind is your fuel tables are set up for air temp in a specific (if a bit vague) region. Your heat riser from your exhaust keep the intake air at something like 25 - 30* if I remember correctly. As the stock TBI system has no provision for an IAT sensor the fueling will be slightly off. Whether it would be enough to notice under normal circumstances, I know not.

This would mean your engine will run lean because of a cooler, so therefore more denser, air charge going into the cylinders. Now can you explain to me how your factory air intake doesn't provide cold air?
 
It does supply cool air, which is then heated, or has hot air added, by the waxstat in the stock air cleaner unit, taking hot air from your heat riser.
This keeps a fairly consistant intake charge temp.

I know it supplys cool air, it was me being kinda a smart a$$ :haha: Its ok though you can't really tell someones tone via internet. I was just further backing up your statement and giving an easy brake down.
 
similar to this

i plan on building something like this but instead of that dryer ducting, just form some thin wall 3" aluminum tubing.

It's all in my head still, and the details arn't all there, but it should be similar to this setup.
 
i guess you don't do much mud, huh, savage? those intake hoses look like they're headed somewhere pretty low. i'm using the stock location, which is pretty high, and i had water in there. not enough to stall the engine, but enough to make it hiccup.
 
well, it'd be for for 83, it's diesel so it doesn't do awesome in the mud, but it gets the job done. I'm building it for rocks, my 79 pickup is the future mud truck. i would run the tubes to the factory intake tube holes in the radiator support holes on each side of the radiator, which arn't all that low considering the height of the truck. they are at my shoulders, which isn't saying much since i'm not all that tall, 5'8 on a good day:haha: .
 
thats the low budget idea i had in my head, i just wanted to run some 3-4 inch bendt tubing into my cleaner assembly. very cool though harry.
 
Unless you are running some performance mods that drasticly increase air flow. The stock TBI CAI is fine. It will flow way more air than a 480 CFM TB will. Why spend all that money for minimual if any gains.
A K&N filter, Modify the stock air box by cutting a hole in the front to add a little air. And remove the Heat riser and plug the hole to clean up the air flow will cost under 50.00 and will give more gains than an aftermarket CAI.
 
I ran a setup like you want to build. The dual ram air box with two plastic ducts going to either side of the radiator in the factory openings. It didn't do much for performance. If you want the air box I still have it, let me know (PM). It has seen better days, discolored, but not cracked.
 
Made a dual snorkel setup for my truck, "cold air" when it was carbed and made absolutely no difference whatsover.

Looked kinda cool, but that was it's only positive feature. Spent a decent amount of time making it from stock parts.

I have enough trouble seeing where I'm going on a trail with a stock hood in front of me let alone with that scoop and lights there!
