Considering a Suburban Tow Rig

Few other maintenance costs to consider on the newer diesel trucks is that the dpf will get full and have to be replaced . They are not cheep either.

I don't even know what that means...

Diesel Particulate Filter a.k.a. not cheap LOL.

We sell them used all the time for $1,000-$1,400.

Haha used to your 6.2s and your cheating TDI?

Really, the best I understand it, only our government is cheating us out of high performing diesel vehicles. Nox emissions break down naturally in the atmosphere as far as I know. I'm not an expert though.

The government never would have hit an American manufacturer this hard. That's for sure.

Ya that's because they didn't bail out VW :surepal:

I agree though, stupid arbitrary emissions regulations have stifled diesels. It's a miracle that we even have any.

ya most diesels these days put out cleaner air out the tailpipe then they suck in

I wouldn't worry about a 6.5 being under powered, as been said there is a ton of aftermarket support for them. For not that much money you can make a 6.5 run like a completely different animal then stock. That particular truck I would run from with that frame damage.

You mention wanting to carry a few people comfortably, a crew cab would be the smallest I'd get then. An extended cab might be little tight on longer trips.

The 06 is nice. sell the rack body? Or flat bed dump with sides, cut out back of cab and part of roof and put a cube on it with awning on the side and toy hauler door on the back. Use the toy hauler door for a patio.

Haha, you are quite optimistic about what my fab skills are capable of.

They can be cleaned , Cummins Northwest in Anchorage charges 75.00 to clean them. And they can be cleaned over and over again as long as there is no damage to them.

The shop I worked in on the slope had a cleaning oven as well , and it works slick .
Very few times did we ever find a DPF that could not be cleaned and needed replaced .

With him living in the area where cars rust away probably would rot away before it got plugged but it would still have to be replaced to pass emissions or inspection.

Pretty sure they are stainless , mine is 4 yrs old and still looks new.

why not a topkick for a tow rig? I definitely would roll in one of these...

With his budget in mind, he's looking at pretty much all pre emissions trucks anyway.

Rich, stay 2006 and older. DPF equipped trucks are 2007.5 and newer. Also, steer clear or late 07, 08, 09ish years that are a really good deal. ESPECIALLY, with 6.4L Fords.
