Crew cab. Use it or lose it.

Giving the crew cab a once over before the trip to Zim's place and decided to swap the gear oil in the NV4500. Good thing I was under it wrenching.

There are 4 bolts that hold the trans to the bell housing. 2 were gone and the other 2 were not finger tight.

Put the aluminum PTO covers on this one while I was under there. The start of my NV4500 cooling system.

This one is on upside down so that the NPT ports don't line up straight across the transmission. Seems you could pump the lube in and right back out again. I'll bring the cold in this side so it can pump directly onto a gear and get splashed around a bit. At the very least there will be some dispersion in the case.

I think I finally found my fuse burner. One of the wires for the tailgate lights had come off and was shorting out.

Anybody know if the NV4500 gear lube is still a GM dealership only thing? Aggravating as hell when you can only buy it one place and they only stock 2 quarts. Wednesday noon before I'll have the rest of the gear lube to fill the case.

Dodge dealers should stock the correct lube, but iirc amsoil or someone else aftermarket does make it also, can't remember who for sure:doah:

beaver oil?
Glad you found that bolt issue Kert....have you had any trans driveability issues that may have been related to the loose trans?
I'm liking the idea of the circulation of the fluid...will this be the driver selectable pump system you mentioned before?

If it's Synchromesh then Advanced Auto carries it too. Think it's the Valvoline version?

It's not synchromesh. Two trucks in my fleet take synchromesh and it is not the same as the NV4500 lube. Synchromesh is GM p/n 12345349 and the NV4500 is gm p/n 12346190.

I just can't get over how strange it is that these trans take a special lube and that their life span is so significantly shortened by using anything other than he exact proper lube.

not only will the life span drop on the special coated syncro rings with wrong lube . try shifting one on a cold winter day after its been sitting all night in the cold .

other problem others have noticed was input bearing lack of lube . so its been said over fill by 1/2 qt of fluid . and to do this fill trans threw the shifter tower .

I have also heard dodge fluid is cheeper than gm stuff .

Exactly. It's the syncros that rot out fast with wrong lube. They are Kevlar coated brass synchronizers. 3rd gear syncro usually goes out first. The rating on the nv4500 gear oil has to be GL-4. Not the standard GL-5.

I used in the past Penzoil synthetic 75w-90 GL-4 oil for years in my dodge 4500 begin the cummins.

So, what if the crew cab were lowered and 2 wheel drive again. More like Dave's BART?

With Cummins?

I think you know where I stand!
Its like riding in a limo!

Not sure about the Cummins yet. Or the 2wd lowering thing. I love it the way it is but know it would do better mileage wise with it lower and 2wd. At the same time, it does get some use in the snow so the 4wd certainly has its place.

Alot to think about.
