Crew cab. Use it or lose it.

I have had symptoms very much like this and turned out the gas went bad in the tank. Any chance your fuel is old? The new fuels go bad much faster than the fuels of yesteryear(the ethanol maybe). Try dribbling a sip of fresh gas from a can down the carb, put a breather back on to protect against a backfire, and roll it over. I know it doesn't make sense but the fresh fuel down the carb trick has helped me rule some things out or enlightened me many times. JUST BE SURE TO DO IT SAFELY. I knew a guy that was doing this while his son cranked the engine over, it backfired and burned him badly. In extreme cases of old/bad fuel the plugs become fouled and must be replaced. The bad gas usually is accompanied by a very fuming smell when if/when it starts and runs in a seemingly lean condition. Also if you do rule out bad gas or know this to not be possible, take a look at the throttle shaft bushings and if all else fails pull the lid and look for debris in the carb.

The stupid part is, after adjusting timing, starting from TDC, it sat in the shop and idled smooth for a couple minutes while some things were moved out of the way to get it out of the shop. Backed it out carefully (read slowly) and then goosed it out in the alley, thinking it feels good to have my truck back. Drive around the block and dead. I think this sort of eliminates alot of stuff right off the bat. Not saying I didn't go back and check things.

I pulled the carb tonight. I didn't have time to pull it apart though. I'll get into that sometime tomorrow.

I have had a similar situation before. It would run great, idle, drive around, until I got on it for a bit and opened the secondaries. Then a piece of debris went into the needle and seat in the secondaries, and was holding it open after I let off. Fuel was pouring into the intake and flooding the engine out, was diffucult to start, and would barely run when it did start unless you revved it to the moon to clean it out, and I didn't even have an electric pump, that would make it worse for starting. It was a tiny shaving of rubber hose from inserting it onto steel lines, I had just added a nitrous system, and that was passed the filter, it got me. Did you pop the air cleaner and look at the carb while you were trying to start it? (I'm not saying this for you, but for anyone reading thing that isn't careful, don't be sticking your head over the carburetor and cranking the engine to check things, not safe).

Good luck, hope you find it.

GOOD ADVICE THERE, MY UNCLE WAS HELPING ME WITH A PROBLEM AND IT BACKFIRED, HE HAD AN UNLIT CIGARETTE IN HIS MOUTH AT THE TIME, IT GOT LIT ALONG WITH HIS MUSTACHE BEARD AND EYEBROWS GETTING SINGED.

I think he's onto something....stay tuned!

OK, its running smooth and I drove it the 15 miles home tonight. I took the carb off and took it down to my uncles place. I understand what a carb does but haven't spent much time inside one, so I deferred to a more experienced professional.

So, he pulls the top off the carb and holy cats! There was a lot of garbage in there.

Here's my theory...

When the original fuel pump died, it sent pieces down stream. Then when I pulled the filter to try and trouble shoot the problem and ran for a short time without the filter, all the junk went in the carb and waited for the opportune time to strike.

Just a theory.

Makes sense to me, I once learned the hard way to keep carbs right side up unless I plan on going into them. I flipped one over once while I had the engine out for other issues, when everything was back together and I started it up the needle/seat stuck and it spewed gas right out of bowl vent tube. Apparently when I flipped it upside down debris had gotten into the needle and seat gumming it up. I've always had to learn the hard way.

...but every problem solved adds to your experience later.

Glad to hear you got it running good again. :waytogo:

Outstanding Kert....good job mang.

Hey at least that didn't happen on the way to/from Moab last year...that would have sucked even more!

True true. After watchin' my uncle jump into it, I'd do it myself next time.

Thought that very thing myself.

By the way, With the aluminum rad that's in there now, it really runs cool. I have some room to push it now without worrying so much about the temp. Hopefully that issue is solved now. It didn't technically overheat before, just ran warm enough that there was really no room for error at all. Old rad had started leaking so I took the opportunity to upgrade.

I'm liking how my Northern rad is working so far....I'm a believer!

Been driving to and from the shop for the last couple days. Running nicely. Temp and oil pressure are in good shape. Voltmeter read a little low for the first day or so and now has come back up to 14. 7psi. fuel pressure.

I have some other priorities for a while. When I can get back to it the list is,

reinstall air switch for the york
rebuild dually wheels
swap to the radials
regear the rear axle
swap the front axle to the HP60
Build yet another front driveshaft

At some point before it sees heavy towing duties I will build a cooler system for the NV4500.

I'm also going to rebuild the front and rear bumpers. Rear one will be just like our production rear bumper save a bolt on reciever tube setup. Front one will be something a little different but should suit the truck well.

Very cool Kert, seems like the list is never ending at times, but I find myself separating wants and needs to get stuff done.
Is there something wrong with the 60 that's in it now, or is the HP just an upgrade because you got it.
