Hi everyone,

Just wanted to start my build thread since I finally have; or am getting all the parts. I have read long and hard about what people want in a Suburban, and this is what I have come up with. This is an ongoing project, so if you have a better idea than me, then please share because its not to late to change. This will be driven on the street, and it will be offroaded hard. Meaning I'm not afraid of dents, and I do things like the Hammers in Johnson Valley.
This is a 1983 Diesel Suburban with front and rear a/c and heat, barn doors...whatever
I'm installing a 12 valve Cummins turbo diesel with 100hp injectors and turbo mods. Its sitting at about 350hp right now. I'm also installing a nv-5600 trans, atlas 4-speed transfercase, front dana 60, rear 14 bolt ff, 5.38 gears, detroit out back, arb up front, 42" tsl's on recentered hummer h1 beadlocks, hydro ram assist steering, full length rock sliders, blazin offroad tube rear bumper, 52" springs front and rear, ord shackle flip, ord crossover steering,.

Anyways, here it is...

This is how I got it...

This is the nv5600 trans, which will give me 5.63:1 granny gear, and .73 overdrive

Here is the front dana60, and rear 14ff. The rear has detroit locker and both have 4.10 gears

I love it! This looks like a great build in the making. I live close, so if you need a hand once in a while, let me know. I also happen to have a couple of parts subs in the yard, and my buddy runs an '87 sub 4x4. If you need a part, also let me know. Good luck and happy building.:D

not really;why? I got a full set of 52" springs front and rear off a 89 blazer, so thats why I was going to run them. Is there a better spring I should run in the rear?

More flex from 56's and possibly a better ride too. The holes are already in the frame to move the rear hangers back 4 inches.

**edit** I forgot you're doing a shackle flip, so you'll be grinding rivets anyway.

you can run 56s backwards to get a better departure angle, not that a burb needs help with that :doah:

they were stock in my burb. I am pretty sure 3/4 PU had them too.
I have an extra set, but there going on the front :wink1:

The engine is a 98 model, and yes this transmission is a 6-speed with granny and o.d. The granny gear is 5.63:1 and the od is .73

My plan is to give a day by day with pictures. Then when the project is complete I will do a reorganization so to speak, clean it up and repost as a how-to tech article. This is not a project that will take a year to build; I have a goal of two months to completion.
I'am still trying to completely strip the burb. The motor is disconnected, and ready to pull out, which I will accomplish today. The old axles and trans/t-case are out, the gas tank got pulled out to make room for the ORD shackle flip; which took me most of yesterday. I had to grind each rivet out then redrill the holes. There are other holes about four inches back for use with 56" springs. These are factory holes that 3/4 ton suburbans used when running the longer springs. Today I was able to aquire a set of 56" springs from David(dwitcher), I have to take off the shackle flip and move them back about 4".
Here is the shackle flip installed

Depending on which transmission you use, you might run into a small problem. I think if you used common automatic, like a built 400, your transfercase options are better than mine. I'm using a nv-5600; which has a 1-1/2" 29 spline output shaft. This is pretty rare, and there is only two years that a 205 was built to work with this, and it uses a coupler/adapter setup. This is what I went with. Its out of a 93 Cummins truck with a getrag tranny.
The other option is something like an Atlas, but for what I wanted it was going to be around 2800-2900 bucks. The 205 was much cheaper and its freshly rebuilt.
The downside to the 205 is that I'm stuck with the 1.98:1, since lowmax doesnt make a 3:1 kit for this application.
So with my 5.38 gears, granny low 5.63 trans, and 1.98 transfercase I'm only going to have a crawl ratio of like 60:1.
Ultimatly I will save up for a stack or Atlas 4-speed, but not till next year.
