I reciently replaced my rusty rear bumper on my 81 Chevy 3/4 ton.. I purchased a new heavy duty aftermarket bumper ( universal design to fit Chevy, Dodge, and Ford trucks ). After careful measuring I ordered enough 3/8" diamond plate steel to clad the new bumper on top, back, bottom, and sides. All the ordered pieces were trimmed to fit with an air grinder and sawzall. My friend tack welded all the fitted pieces. We carried it to a Vocational School where the welding class practiced on it using a proper heavy duty industrial welder. When I got it back I coated it ( 3X ) inside and out with a truck bed coating ( sold at Advanced Auto ). It weighs about 230 lbs. I don't think this bumper will rust out now. If I get rear ended I can touch up the bumper paint loss with more truck bed coating. It still looks like a factory Chevy bumper only covered in steel diamond plate.
