I seem to recall some dicussion in a build thread regarding cutoff wheels. I am thinking it was in Zim's, Greg's, Ryoken, or NorCal's. the discussion was about good wheels vs cheap wheels and how long they lasted for your dollar. Anyone recall it?

I used my last 4 1/2" Dewalt one and grabbed some cheapies on the way home to try. I also called a buddy of mine from Alro Industrial supply and asked him to get me a couple of good ones to try out, so we will see how they compare. What are you guys using?

I am cutting some plate steel to make a stand for my newly acquired horizontal band saw. It's an older taiwanese model but used to cut pretty straight. I'll post some pics soon.

Abrasive trader on here is a vendor for Roark supply

I haven't used his stuff a lot, but love what i have used.

He has a CK5 discount, and good pricing.

Check him out.

I use Pearl Abrasives cutoff wheels and grinding wheels and I am pleased with their life and the prices are great. I prefer to buy USA made but sometimes it just isn't in the budget for everything.

Walter was the brand mentioned in that thread. Ask Greg72 what he thinks...I know after using every brand known to man the Walter disc's still cut the straightest, and they last a ton longer than anything else.

We use Sait brand were I work. Them seem to last pretty good unless you're being stupid with them. Biggest thing I've found is to use the wheel that's made for what you're cutting, ie steel wheel for steel, aluminum wheel for aluminum.

While we are here... Grinding always gives me lung issues if i don't wear a mask. Any disks out there made of not super toxic kill Deuling's lungs material?

Sadly no, any grinding/cutting disk makes a lot of dust. All of which is bad for you. So wear a good mask and have good ventilation.

Come on, you mean to tell me there is no Gluten free, All organic cutting disk manufacturer out there yet???? :doah:

Just drag the parts around in the sand dunes for a day.

The disks make the nasty cloud of nasty dust. I dont care about breathing in airborne steel shavings..

Maybe if i drag the cut off wheels in the dunes for a day......

Not sure if I talked about it in my thread or not Jim, but I asked Kert what he used and he gets them from Fastenal, Sait brand recommended by professionals!

Fastenal, direct competitor to Alro! I was actually at Fastenal in Sprinfield on Teusday and didn't think to ask about wheels. You know what! Now that i think of it im gonna call Fastenal and ask for a sample pc, them jokers had no issues calling me and asking for some free screws (seriously, with a name like that you would think they would have a few screws). :dunno:

I hope to burn up some of the cheapies tonight, to get an initial comparison between them and the Dewalts, my guess? At $15 for 25 of them it isn't going to be pretty.

I'll have to ask what brand my buddy will be getting me for test. I will be meeting him at a local shop this morning anyway.

Dave, how you been? I almost gave you a call on Monday, I was in the area bummin' around and I was going to stop by for a bit.

I've transitioned to Walter cutoff wheels from the cheap HomeDepot brands that I'd been using previously....

That works out to about $3.50 ea. They DO last a long time unless you are really leaning into them hard or cutting 1/4" plate constantly.

I've been through 50 of them in the last couple of years.... And just got a fresh pack of 25 delivered. With all my recent build progress I finally needed more.

I have had decent luck with the Mibro's from tractor supply. They had a sale last time I was there. I bought two 15 pack of the thin cut offs for 20 bucks. If you lean into them like greg said they disappear pretty quickly.

Thanks for the input. I may grab a few from TSC, as well as some from Walter. I asked my Alro contact what brand he was getting me and says Pferd (www.pferdusa.com). I've never heard of them but I think I'll give him a shot.

As a footnote i hear Sait and Pferd are direct competitors as well. It would certainly be nice if I could get them as well as a Walter to run head to head. A real world non partisan test of sorts. I do not have a ton of cutting but what I do have is all .125" plate and I think I can measure each wheels life in inches. Not the most scientific, but I have to do something in the garage before I go nuts.
