Cut-off wheels

Jim give a call anytime, I"m working some f'd up hours these days, but if I don't want to be bothered I shut off my phones...give me a buzz if your in the area again!

While we are here... Grinding always gives me lung issues if i don't wear a mask. Any disks out there made of not super toxic kill Deuling's lungs material?

What do you mean, aluminum oxide is part of this nutritious breakfast! Kinda like zinc oxide...

... on topic, Captainfab, the Pearl ones you mentioned, are they the diamond-tipped metal disc jobs Roark has/had? They were stupid spendy but looked clever... I just have a backstock of regular abrasive wheels and can't justify anything nuclear / $$.

I ran out of Dewalts wheels while cutting out my hangers so I used a cheapy off brand I found on a job....mistake...the wheel disintegrated halfway thru a rivet, caught traction, yanked the grinder out of my hand and walked across my fingers:eek1:. A big tube of Neosporin and a box of bandaids later I can just now use my left hand in the shower without wanting to scream.

No, I haven't splurged and bought any of Pearl's diamond cutoff wheels yet. They say they are supposed to last as long as 65 traditional abrasive cutoff wheels. I've just been using their 4.5", 5" and 6" abrasive cutoff wheels as well as grinding wheels. I've been real happy with how long they last and the pricing. I get mine from my local welding supply.

so whsts the best for the $? I use my grinder a lot, I like the way it cuts over my plasma but a lot of material I cut is .250 or .375. I blow through dewalt wheels. I wish my grinder had a smaller head so wheels lasted longer.

Ok, so I did a bit of research today. My biggest thing is longevity and value. Lets face it is one wheel lasts 3 times longer than another and is twice the cost, its a better value. You can buy 100 HF wheels that may last as long as 5 dewalts. Longevity is key.

Its hard comparing these things because there is so many different wheels. I always try to but in 25 packs so that's what I did my comparison on. Here was my findings. These are all for 7/8s arbors and standard grinders. All prices are before shipping

Smith and arrow- 5 inch OD-.472 thick-$32.71 (Heard lots of good things about these)

Pearl- 4.5 OD-.45 thick-$92.00

Walter (as greg posted) 4.5 OD-.469 thick- $83.31

PFERD-5 inch-.45 thick-$72.80

Diablo- (note couldn't find these in 25 pack so I made a 25 pack) 4.5 OD-.40 thick-$74.25

Dewalt XP- (note 5 packs, so I did 5x5) 4.5 OD-.45 thick-41.40

metabo slicer- 4.5-.40-$30.00 :eek1: Found on ebay so who knows...

Sait- 6 inch OD (all I could find in 25 pack) .45 thick-$66.10

Norton-4.5 OD-.40 thick- 40.95

Im really thinking about trying out the smith and arrow brand...

all that, and no 3M... :dunno: one of the leaders in abrasives, forever.. that's what I run, green corp...

All the reading I did on the net between GJ, PM and pirate there wasn't a lot of talk of 3m cut offs. Read plenty on grinding wheels but not cut offs, but this is open forum your more than welcome to add any input/ cost you have :D

I don't know who got the price of $92.00 for 25 Pearl 4.5 x .040 x 7/8" cut off wheels, but they were getting screwed. That's $3.68 ea. I get the Pearl 5" x .040 x 7/8" cut off wheels for $1.67 ea. That's $41.75 for 25. Granted not everyone will get that good of a price, but they should still be a lot less than $3.68. They should be under $2.00.

just got off the phone with frank at roark supply. Super nice guy. In his opinion walter is the best. He does not sell them as they wouldnt move due to price.

He sells pearl and at a good price too. Im going to order some tomm along with his made in usa wheels. He is very smart and knows his stuff. He says a pearl (german) will last about 1.5 times longer than a dewalt XP which I currently use.

Now the question, 4.5 inch or 6 inch :D

I buy my abrasives at my local welding supply.

That's a decent price for 4.5" cut off wheels. That works out to $1.51 ea, plus shipping. I use the 5" cut off wheels

You need to look at the rpm rating of the wheels and how many rpm's your grinder turns. I have used the 6" cut off wheels when I have needed the extra reach, but I am extra cautious in doing so since I am exceeding the rpm rating of the wheel.

Yes Walter makes excellent abrasives, but they are $$$$.
