Cut-off wheels

I was at the local welding place the other day, having beaten Murphy by running out of welding wire AND gas, and doing so BEFORE noon on Saturday when the place closes ... anyway, they had the Pearl German-made discs. They get something ridiculous like two and a half bucks a pop, but I grabbed a couple and gave them the proverbial spin.

Obviously they're better than the Harbor Freight crap; two of these lasted as long as a ten-pack of the cheapos. Just on a per-dollar basis I come out ahead for not having to stop and change wheels all the time :deal: Plus I found I could do more creative cuts as the discs are far less susceptible to damage when doing off-kilter cuts in tight spaces.

The difference wasn't as noticeable when compared to some other stuff I bought from Roark a year or two back. Sadly I didn't track brands, but I think they were like a budget US-made disc, so they were better than the Chinese junk but still not quite as nice as these Pearls.

I think, w.r.t. cutoff wheels anyway, you get what you pay for.

Its true. I havent bothered with HF wheels since the very first time I tried a pack. We use Sait's at work and they dont really impress me to be honest. I bought a 5 pack of dewalts at Lowes when we were in VA the other week and I really forgot how good they actually are. The key is to buy them in bulk rather than getting bent over for them at lowes...

Have to keep them spinning at the speed of heat or it tears them up also. Need your compressor to keep up.

figured id update this a bit. I still havnt got to my pearls yet, ive been working on the made in usa discs from roark supply. My local welding shop gave me a walter disc the other day and I must say I cut a dana 44 tube and it doesnt even looked like it wore at all. I did chatter quite a bit before starting the cut though.

Update- busted out a pearl today, still not as good as the walter disc. I switched back to the walter (still some left) and man that thing cuts. Throws sparks from one of the shop to the next. Im sold on walter next time I need to buy wheels again. These are the walter blades ive been using

Welcome to my world.... :D:thumb:

Walter rules. I've been using them for everything I've built for the last three years.

Been blowing thru discs recently, figured id update.

The pearl slim cuts id say are as good as the roark supply made in usa discs. Neither compares to the walter discs.

I recently picked these up

Id say they rank along with the pearl/ roark supply discs but cheaper. They are chinese but seem decent. I think I got 25 on ebay for 20 bucks shipped. I will probably re purchase till I hit the lottery and buy 100 walter discs lol
