Cwn_Anwyn's 87 Dodge Raider DD build

O this is right up my alley :waytogo:

I love the odd ball **** it Ill build everything myself rigs with no support.

So whens the toy front straight axle and 33s coming?

Its already on 33s but I may go to some 34 LTBs soon. Or if I can pick up a good set of 16" wheels I may go metric but still in the 33 to 34 inch range. I just really like my alloys on there right now.

A solid front axle is definitely going in there eventually. But that has to be after the Blazer gets some attention.

My buddy built his with a 4.3 chevy, a 3 inch body lift and 36's

Thats pretty sweet!:waytogo: I dont plan on going bigger than 33s with mine. I'll save the big stuff for the K5.

The body lift is about the only way you can go with these things. You can crank the torsion bars for a few inches up front and longer shackles in the back for a few inches. But then add the body lift and you can run 36s/37s. The axles can usually handle it, but if its still got the stock 2.6 or 3.0 in them they get sluggish. I think there is a few overseas lift kits stateside, but the last time I saw any posts on them, they were very expensive and you still end up with all that IFS stuff hanging off the front. I would rather just go SAS and fab something up to get more lift.

I've seen a few 4.3 conversions. I almost went that way with mine. But I really liked the turbo idea and had seen a few others that did the swap. So I was hooked.:woot: Now if I had known how hard it is to find good Starion parts then I might have reconsidered this swap.:doah::dunno:

I've heard the montero/raiders are surpisingly overbuilt. My ex wife had one way back when i fist met her and i beat the crap out of that thing. Rallied it, jumped it, reved the piss out of it. plus drove it all over Oregon.

:haha: Yep, it has the driver side bouncy seat. That usually comes in the factory off-road package. It was the suspensions seat, head light washers and rear LSD. Easiest way to tell which ones have them and which ones dont, is to look for the headlight washer nozzles up front or the orange sticker on the driverside center console for the Limited slip.

Those freekin drivers seats are the coolest things ever! So many adjustments and so bouncy! haha.

And the "Tip over" dial on the dash is bada$$ :haha:

This is cool. I like stuff like this, and it seems like stock trooper, raider, 4 runner all seem to.do so good when pushed to the limits.

I can't wait to.check it out, I got busy this week and can't make it out.

The inclinometer is kind of funny. I think by the time it warns you that your about to tip, you should probably know it already.:doah:

I did pick up a guage pod from a later model SR that has a nice compass and an Altimeter. I thought that was kind of comical, like your just flying along in your Montero and you dont know how high you are.:pimp:

No problem. Are you going out on this weekends run KTM posted about? I hope I can get this back together in time. But it depends on what I get done tomorrow at the junkyard.

I had to check the oil pump and pan so I decided to drop the pan. In order to get to the oil pan I had to drop the front diff. I needed to do some work on it anyways and it made me redo the brakes.

Here are the details on the brake upgrade.

a 4 Cyl (87 and older) has 10" x .79" rotors and the caliper piston is 2.1248".

the later 4 Cyl (88 on) had 10.2" x .866" rotors and the caliper piston is a little larger at 2.249"

The later V6's had the same calipers (2.249" pistons) but the rotors were slightly larger at 10.9"s.

The Gen IIs used a similar rotor at 10.9"s x .866"s but the two piston caliper has 2 pistons at 1.6875"s.

Here is a side by side comparison of all 3 rotors. 4 cyl is on the right, V6 is in the middle and Gen II (3.0) is on the left.

I thought I had posted the last update on it. Its kind of screwed up with it. Back in late June/July the soon to be ex wife told me to get rid of one of the projects and get something that ran 100%. I knew I wouldn't get jack for either of the VWs that I have and I wasn't getting rid of the Blazer so I put the raider on the chopping block. I had just finished putting on the brand new casting M28 head with a lot of work done to the head. But still couldn't get it running perfect enough to be my DD. I think it was an issue with my wiring harness. So I used it as trade in on my WRX. I listed specifically what needed to be done on the raider and pulled off almost all of the good stuff and returned it basically to stock, except for the turbo setup. The sorry dealership only gave me 500 for it. :angry1:

Then August rolls around and I get slapped with the dreaded paperwork. :doah: Then to make it an even more enjoyable month I was walking through the local pick n pull yard and there is my damn Raider sitting in the back.:doah::angry1: The dealership didnt even do a thing to it. Glad I pulled all the good **** off it before I traded it in, minus those hubs. So while I was in the yard I pulled the brand new head back off it and resold the head to another Starion/Conquest local guy for his car. So this project ended sadly. But I got the Rex out of it and am finally focused on just one 4wd project now. So it wasnt a total loss.:pimp:
