Dabomb's 1985 Jimmy - Rust Repair/Floor Replacement/Upgrades: TPI Swap

be VERY forewarned about that.. I've said it in here before, seamsealers have a horrible shelflife... old, sealed is bad enough, but once opened, dont expect it to last more than week or so even with the tip sealed up...

I buy what I need.. from my autobody supply store..

You think I will need more then one to do everything I will need to do? If I don't then I will just get enough to do what's needed. How much can you get sealed out of one tube?

a tube does a fair amount of stuff... just depends how heavy you go... it's usually like 14, $15 a tube...

Lunch break update. Got the welding done on that piece I got tacked in last night. Ground down the welds and got a coat of primer laid down.

After that I worked on getting the piece cut out for the last big piece for the drivers side.

Got it cut out and started searching for something to do the first bend going upright towards the rear floor. At first I thought maybe a paint can. But squeezed one with my hand and I started to bend. So I looked some more and found a old alum bat. It worked like a champ! Finished that bend. Then got the final bend that I wanted so it could go under the lip of the rear floor. I left that corner of the rear floor unwelded so I could do this.

Once it passed the test fit I laid a couple coats of primer down on the back side of it and left it to dry while I eat lunch. Heading back out soon and gonna get it welded up and ground smooth then will get that side coated.

Then I will need to fab two little pieces of metal to go at the two ends of the wire channel so it is closed up.

taking into account the amount of stuff you have on the underside of the back floor, in addition to what's up top, by the belts, etc I would guess you'll go thru every bit of 2 tubes of seam sealer... if you slather it on, prolly 3...

Yeah. I might as well just get those three. I know in a few spots I will be putting it on thick. Is it workable kindve like caulk where you can use your finger to get it down and smooth? With a glove on of course.

I generally just drag an acid brush across it... it's a bit sticky.. you can also use a bit of soapy water on your finger to smooth it out too... I've even used a spray bottle of very soapy water on top of it, than dragged a finger across on exposed spots that I want to look real smooth..

what is your coating process gonna be other than green?

Drivers side floor is ready for seam sealer and bed liner!!!

I did my best on the ends of the channel. Kindve hard to get in there to get a good weld or to grind it any.

Got the floor coated with primer then headed to the passenger side to start thinking of a plan of action. This side was much less rusted. It had been previously prepared in the corner. I also had already patched the spot above the rear cab mount before I started on the drivers side.

Once I decided how I would do things I got the cut off wheel out and went to town on it.

That was where I left it. Had to go to work. But I plan on finishing up some cutting on the rockers. Then get the new ones sized up for install. I will get the channel installed after that then hope to do that new panel all in one piece.

I figured I would give everything one finally good coat of green. Then after that I was just planning on doing that bed liner. I will do the seam sealer before the final coat of green. Then once it has dried I will do the bed liner. Is that the correct method or should I go about it differently?

well.... I would just do a last coat if you want, than seam seal, than do your liner... don't put the green over the sealer..

technically, your not supposed to seam seal right over the green.. I've done it without issue, just sayin.. I usually like to put it on top of my fill primer, than refill prime the joints, than paint..

but obviously your skipping a middle primer... just make sure you THOROUGHLY scuff the green before bedlining... as gritty as you can get away with, without going thru... maroon scuffpad for the nooks and crannies, and maybe some 220 to 280 on the large areas..

Tonight I got some more work done on the passenger side. Got the rest of the rocker cut out and fit the new rocker in with some cutting on it. After that I got the insides of the inner and outer rockers coated in primer and welded together. I finished the night off with positioning the rocker into place to mark its spot so I could get the flange tool out next time I get out there and get it weld in.

It might be a couple days till I'm back at it. I got to spend some time with Kate tomorrow, darn one year anniversaries haha. Then I work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday night at Fazolis. I will be ordering my Seam Sealer this week and might be able to squeeze in my bed liner order.

Well I haven't had any time to get out and work on the truck the past few nights. Might not be out there until Sunday evening after I get off at 5...

But I figured I would try and get some ideas for my quarter panels...they are both in bad shape. Rust around the wheel wells as well as the front lower by the door. You can see some of that section in my rocker pictures.

Well those kind've repairs would be fine and dandy with patches being available for those areas. But then comes in my little passenger side young and dumb mistake I made one winter in high school. Lets just say sides of Jimmys/Blazers+Yellow poles in Walmart parking lots do NOT get along very well. I don't have any pictures from when it happened. But at the time me and my dad got behind it the best we could through the tail light area and bent it back out some. But the damage was already done...here is how it is now.

So I think I have decided to go with getting a whole quarter panel for the passenger side...It's taking a few steps back because of all the work I just did with the rear floor. I could've very well taken it off then. But there isn't anything I can do now about that so it is what it is.

On the drivers side I will just get a patch panel to repair that side. Unless I can find a insane deal on a pair of quarters. I just can't see myself spending that much for two when I really technically only need one.

Back to the floorboard. I have my seam sealer on the way. Says it will be here by Saturday. Hoping to be able to start on the rear floor and getting atleast the drivers side sealed up. No point in doing the passenger side just yet if I am going to be pulling that quarter panel off anyways. Then I can also seal up the drivers side front floor.

I assume that's for seam sealer application correct? I wonder if any places local would carry those. Might shop around today during my lunch break.

yup.. any autobody place will have em.. some auto parts stores.. sometimes you'll see em in plastic bags of 5 or 6.. any marine store should have em.. maybe hardwares, but not as likely...

Sounds like a plan. Got a few places around here to checkout then. Maybe I should just make a few calls to save time.

Any thoughts on the quarter panels and how I'm thinking of doing that? I know all the metal is the same and its just who I get it from and how much they charge. I remember from your Blazer you replaced both your quarters. Got them for a pretty good deal if I remember right at a swap meet. Lucky dog you:whistle:

Rock auto has the passenger side from Goodmark for $287. Shipping runs $121. I will shop around some more for price comparison. I know that beats a few places I have looked.

goodmark is always a decent source...

did you weld your side floor supports to that inner qrter wall?

You know it!:doah::haha:

On the drivers side other then the wheel well (removable by bolts), the only spot that is welded to the quarter panel is the piece of angle iron that I used to let that rear corner of the floor sit on. It is right below the filler neck. Now the front area just forward of the wheel well might be a different story. It was a slightly hack repair done a couple years ago that my friend and I threw together as a quick fix kind've situation. Well the passenger side turned out decent enough for me not to replace when I did the whole rear floor.

I say all that to say, I have no idea what is connected to the quarter panel in that area.:doah: So my guess will be, there will be a lot of cutting to remove that quarter panel. Live and learn right?

what yr is the rig? it matters... it's bolted to the wheelwell... and USUALLY bolted to those 2 floor sections in front and behind the well.. but the newer ones can be welded...

it also has 4 bolts per side that bolt the tailpan to the qrter from underneath in the corner... it is fillet welded at the bottom of the C-pillar.. and than spotwelded down the door jam..
