Dabomb's 1985 Jimmy - Rust Repair/Floor Replacement/Upgrades: TPI Swap

Hoping for a messed up wire or loose connection. But if it isn't that I hope it is a problem with the gauge over it being a problem with the brand new sending unit. :doah:

Yeah, I'd rather pull the dash a coupla times than drop the tank once. And I don't like pulling the dash. We enjoy this hobby, this is fun, right? :haha:

QFT!

I enjoy this hobby...I spend vast amounts of money to partake in this hobby...I look forward to free time for my hobby...I chose to put myself through this...

All things I regularly tell myself. And my girlfriend.
She just...doesn't...get...it :dunno::haha:

It is all COMPLETELY worth it in the end though! burnout

Idk why you guys think dropping the tank is so bad... I've done it about six times in the past two years. Although, it has been almost empty at all those points because I knew I was going to have to do it.

I've done it 1/2 full, etc plenty of times.. nothing a floorjasck and some strategic lumber can't handle...

Yeah, I have a stack of 4x4 for that, and use one of those HF ATV jacks, has about a 12x18 lifting surface. It's still a pain to juggle all the connections and that though.

Just cut a hole in the floor. I can change a fuel pump in under an hour. I reinforced the edges under the square I cut out with flat strap and i caulk the piece back in. Seals it perfectly and works great.

You mean the rear floor that I spent most of my winter replacing? That's definitely not happening anytime soon. :haha: I've never liked the idea of that. See people do it a lot in the 3rd gen Camaro/Firebirds. Just doesn't seem right. No matter how well it is sealed. And those cars really are a pain to remove the tanks. Rear end needs unbolted and lowered to remove them. With very little room to work back there on them.

I mean it really wasn't THAT bad of a job to take the tank out on these. And I did the lines so they would have slack so I can drop the tank half way and then undo everything. But still, it is something that I shouldn't be doing AGAIN when everything inside the tank is new. That is my main problem with it.

Tonights update.

Got the seat holes drilled. Will get new hardware and reinforce the floor Thursday to install them. I also removed the old seat belts and got the correct throttle cable installed. Had to do a little cutting and trimming on the firewall hole and that spot of the cable so it would fit good and lock in place. I also found out that the sending unit is indeed the issue with the fuel gauge. :doah: If I ground the wire to the gauge it goes to empty. If I check the OHM of the wire coming from the sending unit to ground it doesn't have any continuity/resistance. So it is open at some point between the wire and ground.

I had to order a TV/Detent Cable from Oreilly's. Didn't have one in stock. So that is on the list of things to do Thursday. Along with:

Install hood, install drivers side door, install rear bumper, put back together the dash, finish seat install, seam seal floor, and check everything over to make sure nothing else was forgot or needed done.

Hoping to take the truck Saturday when me and the girl go fishing. Going to be a nice day for a topless cruise in the truck. :woot:

Jimmy/Blazer/truck. I've always interchanged those words when talking about my Jimmy. It's a truck in my eyes. Just with a open cab and a camper top that I am unfortunately required to put on every winter. :haha:

Scratch that last one. I get what you mean now :haha: :haha: I am a little slow in the mornings.

Yeah, hard to tell sarcasm over the internet sometimes without the help of all of these!

:D:waytogo::bow::rolleyes::haha::ears::ignore::saweet::weld::grind::angry1::sign18::zombie11:

So I forgot to mention last night. I had my dad turn the wheel while I looked at all the steering to see where the play that it has had for years now was coming from. The rag joint looked to be just fine. But the front drag link rod end was showing a decent amount of play. So that has been added to my mental list of things to replace before Saturday. Will get one of those when I get my TV (Detent) Cable. I will go ahead and plan for a soon upgrade to an XJ Shaft however just to rule out the rag joint. The TRE's are only a few years old with not much driving from what I remember. Replaced them senior year and stopped driving it daily the year after I graduated.

The first major hiccup in this TPI swap. Got the TV Cable from Oreilly's last night. Went to install it and it is too dang short! The whole thing is long enough. But when I go to click it out to WOT it clicks out past the teeth and then is grabbing on the cable. Looked up the part number and sure enough it's not even for a V8. Its for the V6 Camaro/Firebird motor.:angry1:

And to add to that mess. Napa, Oreilly's, Advanced Auto, Autozone all don't carry a TPI TV Cable. So there went any plans I had of even attempting to drive the truck Saturday. Needless to say I was fuming and that set the tone for the night. After that I moved on to other things. Got the seats bolted up with new hardware and Kate got the rear floor Seam Sealed. It turned out pretty good I think. No pictures cause by time I thought of it my hands were a mess from being under the truck for the TV Cable failed attempt and helping with the floor.

Once I got inside and cleaned up I took to the internet and started searching for what I could order for the TV Cable. Found new GM cables on ebay. All for the tone of $30-$50. Then I stumbled across a replacement cable that was on Summit.

Brand was ATP part number Y363 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/atp-y363/applications/

Shows as fitting Corvette/Camaro/Firebird with V8 Fuel Injection between 1985-1988. Well if it fits a Corvette V8 from those years then it fits any TPI motor cause they are all the same and only came with TPI between 85-91 (92 for Camaro/Firebird). But in 89 I believe the throttle body linkage was changed.

So it got ordered and should be here Monday. Usually 2-3 day shipment when I order from them. Wish I could've got it ordered before the cutoff to get it shipped out last night. Might have got here by Saturday then...

If I don't go fishing tonight with my buddy I will get the drivers door and hood back on with my dads help. Then get the dash back together and do some cleaning up. All that should leave is the TV cable to be back on the road again. Still pissed about that whole ordeal. :sign5:

Got the truck back together Friday night. And Saturday morning was able to get it drivable with the TV cable that wasn't working correctly. It was able to be modified enough to drive it this weekend while I wait on what should be the correct cable which arrives tomorrow. Put about 100 miles on it. Didn't run into any major problems.

Couple things I took note of.

First off, I can't wait to get the end link replaced at the pitman arm. It should show up at my door today and hope to get it installed this week. The steering just is bad. A lot of play in the steering. It doesn't pull in a direction though and if I am on flat/straight roads it will track straight. But that play is just ridiculous. Hoping the end link fixes that.

Second thing I noticed that happened maybe 3 times. On start up it didn't want to start up without me having my foot partially in the throttle. The first 2 times it happened after the truck had been shut off for a couple minutes. So I was thinking a heat soak/tune problem. But then it happened after the truck had been shut off for the whole day Sunday and I went to leave my buddies house. :dunno: I will play with the tune. I know I had to play around with start up fueling on the Trans Am so hopefully that's all I need to do on this.

Third thing I noticed was a vibration. Now this is the first time I have driven the truck since fixing the floors and rear tailpan/body mounts. So before the truck was very loud/banged on bumps and wasn't solid. Now the truck rides smooth and has no banging going down the road or over bumps. So maybe this vibration has been there all along and I couldn't feel it or maybe its a new problem. To me it was mainly felt after the truck had been going down the highway for a while. I would feel it when I was giving it gas to go up a hill and keep speed. Not sure how to explain it. I was thinking u joints and plan on checking them out next time I mess with the truck.

Fourth thing that could be related to third issue. Thereis what feels like play in the drivetrain. Once again, been a while since I have drove it. Not sure if this was there before or not. I think it was though. But if I let off the throttle to decell then get back in the throttle it has a jerk/clunk you can feel. It doesn't help that the throttle has a sticky spot right off idle so it is jumpy when I first get on the gas.

Fifth thing was the Torque Converter wasn't locking up. My tablet was showing that the ECM was commanding TCC lockup but the converter never would lock up. I will check the wiring again to make sure nothing was messed up. It worked before with the stock system and wiring so I know the mechanical side of it is functional.

Other then those the truck is 200% better to drive then it was before. It kept speed going down the interstate at speeds from 70-85mph. Felt relatively smooth at those speeds to except for the above occurrences. Didn't feel or sound like the truck was falling apart going over bumps. Tailgate was quiet except for some bigger bumps. And it is plenty powerful compared to the old setup.

Here is a shot Sunday morning at my buddies house. Was a great weekend to be able to drive around in it. Fun Fact: In the background you can partially see a white house across the street. That would be my grandparents old house. Where I spent my weekends as a kid. How I met the friend I went to visit. There were some good times spent in the miles of land surrounding that picture.

Got some things taken care of last night on the truck. New TV cable is installed. New pitman arm tie rod installed. Torque converter lock up is now functioning when commanded from the ECM.

Took a test drive and the steering is still sloppy. It's better but still bad. I looked at it more closely with my dad turning the wheel and the tie rod at the steering arm has a little slack. Not as much as the one I replaced did. My steering shaft also has some play. I will work on doing the xj shaft conversion and replacing that tie rod. Anyone have a xj shaft for sale? I don't really have any junk yards around me to go searching.

Wow been over a month since I have said anything or updated in this. I've been pretty busy with school finishing up, me leaving my 2nd job and getting hired as a actual full time employee at my main job. So now that I have my nights free and slightly more money coming in then I did when I was working two jobs I will hopefully have more updates!:woot:

But, before I do anything more on the truck I decided it was time to get the Trans Am in the garage to install the TKO 600 5 speed. So check out that thread over in "Other Rides" sub-forum. I started working on it last night and will be getting the motor/transmission out this weekend hopefully.

Once it is back on the road I will move on to getting the steering better on the truck and then fixing things that need attention slowly.

I have driven it here and there. Towed my jetski to the lake over the weekend and it did just fine. Plenty of power now with the TPI. Just wish I didn't have 3.0x gears in the axles. It chugs along at pretty low rpms cruising and doesn't like the hills around my house at 45-55mph. I would like around 1800-2000 at 65-70. I need to do a datalog to see exactly what it cruises at now. I don't trust the tach thats in my gauge cluster.

Well long time no update.

It has been a long busy summer. Back in May I started a full time job surveying at the company I've worked part time for years. Was a draftsman before. Nice change getting outside. I drove the truck off and on through summer. Had a week I drove it everyday due to my new DD needing the rack and pinion replaced. At the end of that week I noticed my u joint was about to explode It honestly should have on the 80mph highway trips I made every day that week. Got really lucky there.

Long story short my transmission also now needs replaced. Years ago I had broke the top passenger side "eye" of the tail housing. Well I temp fixed it knowing eventually it would get worse and need replaced. That time has come. I now have both top "eyes" broke. So the truck is currently awaiting its spot in the garage for a transmission removal. Found a shop local that has a casing and will swap all my guts fixing anything they find bad. $350 if no new parts are required. That is including the casing. Not too bad.

Once that is done I am excited to see how it drives with the bad u joint replaced. It had a wicked vibration from it before. I really should have noticed it long before I did but it was replaced a few years back with not many miles since so I ruled that out as the cause of the vibe. Live and learn I guess.

Liking the new update btw!
