Dakota digital VHX read out.

Why are you worrying about the network cable? The problem is right inside the gauge, right at the LCD. Whenever I see this problem, it's bad contact with the rubber conductive strips. They are pressed between the display and the circuit board behind it. If there's a way to increase the force on that, it should wake up the dead segments.


This is just an example, I have no idea what pitch you need. I'm not recommending to buy anything until you're able to get into the gauge and see what's going on.

Because it was suggested and by the looks of it, it's cracked anyway. The lcd is probably the culprit. Why now? I don't know, the heat must have messed it up. I barely drive the truck, so jostling around isn't likely.

Im going to get the Cat5 cable at the place I bought the gauges from. I'm bringing the gauges with me to show them as well.

Warranty?, they are 3.5 years old so I'm sure they do. but I will find out when I go the place I purchased them or Dakota returns my email.

Edit: these gauges have a lifetime warranty. So, we'll see what they do with this issue. I will have to send the gauges into them for repair., which will be a drag waiting around.

Maybe a dumb question? but I can I plug this into my modem with that cable to power it up, so I can check that ribbon inside instead sweating outside or will that not provide enough power or mess it up.

Opened it up.. the colored wires power the odometer and time. Nothing amiss,

Are all of those screws tight? I would not try to power it from something else unless you have a document showing that you can. Just because it's a Cat5 cable doesn't mean it's Ethernet. Many different things use those cables. Plus, a standard modem/router has no power on those cables. There is a standard for PoE, but that would be unusual in a car.

Yes... screws are good. I'm going to go through the setting later maybe the contrast is messed up or something. That's what dakota said, which doesn't make sense since the other numbers are fine.. but Ill try and they have a full lifetime warranty
 
I disconnected the wires for the odometer and clock and plugged them back in with both cables and the read out is good now.

Since I ordered it, it's was $7 I'll try the new Cat5 cable since the connection is cracked on the original one. and now I have a back up..

If you have time I'd gladly pay for a Cat5e cable, 3ft long.

Dakota charges $10 for the cable but a flat rate of $16.95 for shipping, which I find ridiculous.

One other place has them and want $20 for the cable with $10ish for the shipping.

The one I got from amazon was $7 but a flat Cat5e not round line Dakotas. Is there another way I can insulate the cable or is the flat cable good enough just hanging out behind my gauges?

Doesn’t matter one bit. We run flat cables under carpet all the time.
