Dana 44 standard rotation 3.42 rato.. Pros and cons??

3.31s and 3.42s will work together no problem. There is a bugger factor between the front and rear in all the gear and chain slop in all the running gear.

Toyota guys run 5.38s up front and 5.29s in the back all the time.

offroad maybe but definately not good on paved roads

3.42's are going to be high geared for a 33" tall tire and a 4L60E.

Go with 3.73's. If not deeper.

i do not have a "pile of axles" laying around.. 2 XJ HP D30's and 2 K10 10 bolt housings is the extent of my collection

I replied on pirate too. Those years GM used a 10 bolt front, not a Dana 44. If they did use a 44 it would be a 3/4, usually they are 3.73s or 4.10s, but I've seen 3.42s in the 80s trucks. But rather than waiting and asking all over and waiting and waiting some more, then pay an arm and a leg for the set if you find them, cause someone will think they are rare and worth a stupid amount, just get 3.73s for the front and regear the rear. You will be glad you. The difference in RPMs between the two you or the truck prolly won't even notice.

Yes, the Dana 44 was used from 1978-1980. More commonly though, the GM 10 bolt was used in those years.

yes the 10 bolt was more common in those years... the dana 44's were mainly found in suburbans and some blazers depending on which plant they were produced in.

10 bolts became the norm during the 2nd Design stage of the GM drivetrain change. D44's were used up, or phased out, up to '82 in the GMC trucks.

Do some research about the First and Second Design.

I'm out of this conversation now. All I have to say is swap over to a 10 bolt if you're so hard on about a D44. There are tons of fronts with this ratio readily available from scrap yards or your local buy-sell-trade pages like on Facebook or Craigslist, etc.

Other than that, good luck with your search. I'm not far from you as I'm in Ellsworth.
