hey all,
right now i have 4.56's at both ends. this is totally impractical for my 454, sm465 on the street. i top out at 60 with a cruise RPM of over 3000, way too much for my torque monster big block. right now i am thinking of the long run, i want to put 3.73 gears in instead. will yukon 3.73 gears fit in a Dana 60 (military surplus w/ posi) that originally had 4.56's? would i need reverse rotation for the front? i am not sure about all this. i also wanted to make sure the rear R&P from yukon would work with my detroit locker in the 14bff.

if theres any confusion, i have: Dana 60 4.56 posi (front)
Gm 14bff 4.56 detroit (rear)
i want: Dana 60 3.73 posi (front)
Gm 14bff 3.73 detroit (rear)

PS. what should i expect to pay for installation? i am a very good mechanic when it comes to trucks, but i dont trust myself with gears.

For a Dodge or Chevy D60, you want regular rotation gears (reverse rotation gears are only for Ford front ends). As for the gears, you would need different carriers front and rear which is really what makes your swap much more expensive (especially if you want to keep the posi). The silver lining on this cloud? Lots of people have high (numerically low) carriers that they get rid of for lockers and the such, so finding them used shouldn't be too bad.

hey thanks very much or your help. in my 4wheel parts catalog it says the detroit locker "fits all ratios" i'm not trying to argue, i know you know more than me, are the detroits pretty adjustable to be able to fits any ratio? or is it just a typo? otherwise this is a total buzz kill. thanks again.

PS. what do you guys thinks about a five speed? (nv4500)

The Detroit fits inside the stock carrier, so it fits in any gear ratio. Only 5-speed worth swapping is the NV4500, but not cheap...

The detroit you have in the rear will fit in any carrier. To have 3.73 gears, you need to have the higher (again, numerically lower) series carrier. You currently have the low (higher numerically) carriers. You will need to replace both front and rear carriers to go to 3.73 gears, but you can keep your detroit.

The carrier split for both the 14b and 60 are 4.10s and down and 4.56s and up so you will need new carriers but your detriot will fit the other carrier

wow i totally get it now... thanks guys. would you say i could find carriers on ebay for pretty cheap? just wonderin where i could find the right ones. my axles future is looking brighter! thanks again.
