dana 70

Wire EDM is a form of milling machine that uses a wire similar to a mig welding wire with a very high amprage current running through it to cut metal. We have one wire EDM but it is our newest machine and I haven't got much time to learn anything about it yet.

I took 1/4 inch off my D60 ring gear by chucking it in the lathe and going at it. Slowest RPM and feed I could. I ran a carbide mitsubishi CNMG 432 insert (that a .030 tool nose radius) basically at
G50 S1000 T0101 M8
G96 S200
Then put it on a can cycle with a feed rate of F.0005 and a depth of cut of about .020

Even that slow with a tiny cut I was changing edges about every 10 passes and it took a long time to get .250 off the ring.

might be a dumb question but what is EDM?

Big $ last time I checked.:D

yeah i kinda noticed that lol. hows ur 70 holding up? anything u should look for when considering buying one?

No problems so far. Try to find one thats cheap because the price of parts cost more than 14 bolts and they are heavy too. I shaved mine, try to leave about 1/4" of metal. Also try to find a 70HD, they are bomb proof!!!

Also have seen them in 80s Chevy crew cabs DRWs. I also think they some Dodges too.

as sharp? you mean even wider, right? lol these things dont turn that great to begin with lol... i figger with the skinnys, itll look mo betta with equal width axles...

well im sure u know w/ a skinny rear axle ur turning radius will be better but yeah it looks goofy w/ the front poking out 2 inches more on each side. im kinda liking the 70 rear idea. what about dodge 70s? i noticed the newer models have a speed sensor in the rearend.

The FF 14 bolt and dana 70 are very similar. Same wheel bearings, same size ring gear, same size shafts, same housing thickness and diameter, etc. The 14 bolt has a 3rd pinion bearing and hence is a stronger ring and pinion setup (not that it probably matters much, they're both really strong). A detroit locker for a FF 14 bolt is ~$150 cheaper than the dana 70 version and you can pick up 14 bolts for next to nothing all day. The only real reason to run a 70 is if you want lower than 5.38 gears.

D70HD ring gear is 10.54". 14B is 10.5".

D70HD tube is huge...way bigger than a 14B. 4"

A D70HD shaft is 1.5" 35 spline. 14B is 1.5" 30 spline, however, the pressure angle of the splines on the 14b is different than most any other, which makes up for the 5 spline advantage the 70HD has over the 14B.

A 14B tube is 1/4" thick. All dana axles are atleast 3/8".

Want proof?

1978 14bff. I cut the tubes off to use as diff cover jig-

1/4".

For reference, a Ford D60 REAR-

3/8".

This is one area where BillaVista's 14B bible is incorrect. It lists the 14B as having .5" thick tubes. If it did, they would be ungodly heavy.:doah:

About the only reason to use a D70HD is if ya want deeper than 5.38 gears. Otherwise they're harder to find, there is no difference in strength, they cost more, and they're heavier. Spend an hour shaving a 14b and it atleast matches a 70HD for clearance. Also, a 14b can be found that can be bolted into any of our trucks with no modifications. No D70 can claim that. 14B gears can be set up in 15 minutes with fairly common and easy to find tools. ALL dana axles will takes 2+ hours ATLEAST due to shims UNDER the carrier bearings. And thats if you've done it before, AND get it right the first try.

If you have higher than 5.38 gears and want to use a 70 just to be different...Right on. Otherwise...not very practicle.

Any DRW pickup or a cubevan will have the wider track axle. Often a Dana 70. Wether the 70 is a HD or not varies on the exact application. The Chevy is an HD in the 73-87 style. Ford used them too in the 80's.

EDIT: here's the 14bFF housing I measured:

haha! I just measured the picture of the 14b tube on my monitor with a tape. It's pretty much to scale. lol!

lol sounds fun. are the DRW D70s as wide as the 14 bolt versions?
