I've got a lead on a truck with a dana 60 front and a dana 70 rear. Obviously the 60 is worth grabbing, but id the 70 a decent rear?

Is it a Dana 70U or a Dana 70HD? They are both good rears, just very large, physically. They're just about the same strength as a 14 bolt (depending on whom you ask) just alot bigger of a diff housing. There are plenty of parts available for them, lockers, disc brake set ups, axel shafts, etc.

I have a D70HD from a dually in the rear of my truck so I can run H1 wheels without spacers. The ground clearance at the differential is better but the tubes are 4". 70 uses the same diff cover as a 60, with 3/8 or so of mass surrounding the periphery of the diff cover.. if that makes sense. Hubs are interchangeable with 14BFF. Overall I'm happy with it.

I also run a 70HD from a Chevy dually. I'll admit it can cost more to build but I like the option of bigger gear ratios. They are wider than the typical 14 bolt at 74".

Here's mine - 5.86's, spool, narrowed to 69" & disc brakes from a D60.

thanks guys. This one is a SRW chevy so hopefully it's pretty much exactly what I need without a lot of modifications.

just says '85 GMC, but he claims d60 front and d70 rear.

Check it carefully, there were no SRW D70 equipped square body trucks.

Afaik, for it to be an SRW GM it'll have to be from an '88+ new body style truck but it was only used something like '88-'90 or so.

Even then they still used the 14 bolt a ton. So who knows. If they are out of the truck so many people think the dually axles are some crazy weird looking can't mistake it for anything else they often call them SRW instead of DRW cause they really don't look a ton different if you don't know what your looking at.

they're still in the truck. He's selling the whole thing. I'm skeptical myself since it seemed like a weird combo in a chevy. I'm guessing either they were swapped in, or he's just wrong about the axles. I'll have to go up and look for myself I guess.

My bet is it is a 14. The front maybe a 44 too if he can't tell the rear.

Could possibly be dodge tons swaped in. They had a 70u rear...

Fwiw I'm also building a 70hd, 4.56, detroit, disks, 14b hubs

I just posted on your other page about buying these axles. I assumed the rear to be a 14 bolt as that's what those trucks came with. If somehow it's a SRW Dana 70 I would likely pass if you are trying to keep a SRW and go with a $200 14 bolt. If you want to go with the D70 go with an D70HD and ask him to take a picture of the D70 stamp. If it's an D70HD you can also tell by the bigger 4" axle tubes.

just a bit of info to clear up here.

if its a drw 4x4 truck with the fender's bolted on the outside of the box then it got a dana 70hd 4" tube rear axle.

otherwise it should be a 14ff c&c narrow axle . same with as srw but diffrent brake drums and hubs to make it narrow over the srw axle.

Or if it had dodge axles swapped on it make sure its not a d61 front I think thats what there called they had in the early cummins for running real high gears cant go over 4:10 without running a spacer behind the ring gear I think, its been a while since ive messed with one my buddy ended up picking one up thinking it was a 60 until he tried regearing:doah:

I actually found a different guy selling the axles out of a CUCV (the reason for a different thread) so I decided to pass on this.
