death wobble

my dana 60 death wobble had me stumped but a kingpen rebuild kit for each side fixed my problem. cheap fix too. good luck

As far as I know Steve has been working on a prototype death wobble cure. How about a progress report Steve???

Interesting. I just had my first case of death wobble.

87 K30 crew cab dually... with new tires and alignment.... hit a bump in the road at about 40, death wobble!!!

hasn't done it again, and I've tried to make it. I have yet to look into any possible causes, just reading up online here. Interesting stuff. I am hoping the stabilizer is just shot.

The castor may be getting you, I think factory spec is about 6 degrees, I've run up to 8 and I think I'm back to about 5 now. That seemed to help. The only wobbles I've had were related to loose steering parts and were solved by a stabilizer. It may take a pair of dampers on it to get it calmed down. I hate to recommend band-aids for this stuff but that seems to be what works sometimes. I had a buddy running 40" boggers on a BRAND NEW from the crate D60 and had a DW. We slapped the stabilizers on it and it's fine. didn't question it too far.

Hope this helps

When you guys are talking about shimming the front end, are you shimming the pinion up or down? When I had my ram on it the DW went away, ram was leaking and I took it off and I need to address the real problem and fix it.

Just looked up the caster specs in the factory service manual and it calls for "+8 for reference only, no means of adjustment provided". 8 degrees! Thats a hell of a lot.

i had severe DW with a dana 60 and 40inch iroks, aligned the truck perfectly at work, all new kingpin rebuild, wheelbearings, tierod, ord crossover, stabilizer, still had the DW,

the other day i put ina a few washers between the kingpin spring and cap and BAM no more DW

Hello - I think Im have death wobble problems on my 79 k5 (6" lift / 35 MT)

When ever I hit a bump in the road at about 20-40 MPH the driver side wheel woobles erraticly until I come to an almost complete stop...is the the death wooble people are talking about?

I pulle the front hub apart, and everthing seems fine. When I have the front end jacked up, and check the wheel for any play, I notice that there is a little bit (1/8" if that) on the bottom pin that holds the spindle to the axle, could this be the cause? And is this the kingpin?

thanks

well yes that is death wobble but you`ll have to wait till someone else chimes in about the kingpins

Thanks.

BTW - I have a 10bolt front end.

I just got a dual shock steering stabilizer for the front end, but havent installed it yet. Im was hoping that it will help.

Is there any perticular cure for this problem...from what I have been reading on here, sounds like the entire front end needs to be replaced aling with a new set of tires ;) ?

ok then its not a king pin front end its ball joints....what exactly is the play you have?

edit: the play you have...when do you have it??...what i mean by that is that if you take like a long pole and put it under tire and pull it up is that where the play is??? if so i think ball joints are your problem and they could use replacing....anyone else wanna chime in and let me know if i`m right?

Ok - that is what is loose..according the the LMC catalog page 113, bottom right, it is the lower front axle ball joint. But the play is minimal compared to how much my front tires wobbles when I hit a bump. could this be?

yep also check your TREs and DREs

My exp working on linkage/suspension is minimul, so forgive my newbie questions. On the bottom part of the ball joint, is a "C" clip, and the top part has a bolt/nut w/ cotter pin. can I replace these myself or are they machined in with a press or something of that nature?

BTW BB443, I notice you had a thead posted about DW, did you ever resolve your DW?

yes i did, my issue was really misadjusted steering box and my steering shaft had some play in it so i put a reman in and a shaft out of an XJ and BAM it was gone....in your case i would just try replacing the ball joints

as far as those go i believe thats all part of the ball joint so when you put new ones in you`ll be replacing all of that

Dana 60 Death Woble

The death woble in the Dana 60 comes from the king pin bushings. The compression spring on top of the plastic bushing and the plastic bushing are worn. They will apear to be in good shape untill you compare them with new ones. Offroad design has a kit to fix this. They also recomend shimming the new spring for more pressure on the tappered cup.
