Decent Knob radio for not outrageous price?

I know how to cut the dash up and install radios. That isn't what I was looking for.

Martin

Well I know you want knobs but did you look at my tech write up on the newer style I put in Blackie (the 87 Blazer)?

I know that is why I said what I did. Some one should be able to put a mp3 hookup on the old factory style radios. Have you thought about doing a cd changer to the am/fm?

I don't want a CD changer. I was just curious about the availability, quality, and pricing of shaft mount radios to fit in the stock location.

Most stores keep the shaft style radios between the VCR's and carb rebuild kits.

So you are saying you have nothing to add to this thread???

I think I gave about 30 bucks for mine at oreilys. That was the only auto parts store around that had a radio with knobs.

I did something like this about 20 yrs ago. I opened the radio up and found where the radio output signal fed into the preamplifier so I could use the volume knob on the radio. Then I soldered in a 1/8" jack that went to my portable CD player with a switch so I could select between the radio and CD player. An MP3 player would be no different if you're thinking of using the headphone output jack.
And about a year ago I did the same thing to my Ford radio so I could listen to the tunes on my iphone. But this time I took it a step further and built a circuit to isolate (and add some gain to it so it was louder) my phone from the factory radio so there wasn't a chance of damaging my phone. It was a relatively simple circuit that used a dual opamp, a few resistors and caps.
Let me know if you want me to do a Chevy radio 2.0 revisit. :thumb:

That USA-230 radio looked like a pretty good bargain if you want new. I personally would check some local flea markets and pick up a few old shaft radios. At least one of them might work or can be repaired. I have an ancient aftermarket cassette radio that came with my '79 that had a few issues, I was able to take it apart and fix it, despite have a complete lack of knowledge on the subject.

That's what I was thinking too, but the only person who has used one, gave me a negative review. Was kind of hoping to hear from others who had used it.

Flea markets? I guess you have never been to the sticks of Nebraska. I was looking for new anyway.

Yeah, I've installed a couple cheap radios like that. I was hoping for a better quality unit.

Haha, I've been there plenty... just never went looking for flea markets to find out there were none. But I did see a lot of trucks sitting around and know that folks will often sell parts from them.

I'll be happy to see a review of whatever radio you do get, I think we both have the same goals.

Thanks! This is exactly what I was talking about. Do you have one?

Martin

i cant even put in a post stereo any more. one po cut it out for a cd player.
personaly i still have a pioneer am/fm 8 track player from my chevelle that im waiting to find the right thing to put it in.

I have a retrosound in my 87. No issues and I recomend it to anyone. The only thing I think is wierd is that the volume knob seems to be progressive as you turn it up or down. I use the remote.

Running it with factory speakers that have no issues. Maybe the whiners are looking for supper high end electronics. Thats not what these are. They are good sound with a retro look, not factory, but retro. With multiple modern inputs and outputs.
That is good to know. As you stated, I don't know the expectations of some of the people that have reviewed these units. I think I get where Martin is going with this, and I hope there is an answer.

So I guess what your saying is you really want a knob job one. I was going to put mine on ebay to sell for big bucks. But since people have done for me your welcome to it when I pull it out.

Anyone ever buy one?

I am still using the Pioneer that was installed in this thing in the 80's. it leaves a lot to be desired.....

Sounds like you're up for the position of guinea pig this time.

One of these days. It would be different if the radio that was in there didn't (kind of) work. I'd like to find a nice dash panel for it too.

Martin

I saw an article in the Sept Super Chevy Mag about these...the top of the line one has USB for MP3s or ipod, etc.. I haven't used one myself though...

These days you also can buy an amp and control it with a little mp3 interface and remote that you don't have see from the interior. Although if you want FM I am not sure they have that.
