deep well socket sets

I didn't mean to imply anything, nor offend anyone.
Just to put that out there.... :D
if anything I say on these forums can be taken 2 ways, and one of those ways offends someone, I meant it the other way. :D

I got tired of going to Sear's a 1/2 dozen times a yr to replace exploded ratchets...

weekend warrior, fine.. pro wrench-turner, not for me.. there is a huge difference between Craftsman anything, SK, Husky, etc and Snappie and Mac stuff... if you don't realize it as a pro, than your kidding yourself...

I have been using some of these tool longer than some of you have been alive. And Lord does that make me feel old to type that.

Back when I started buying stuff, Craftsman was about the only game in town. NAPA had individual stuff, not sure who made them, but if you wanted sets, you went to Sears.
Some of the local shops might have used Snapon, but there was no truck working this area.
The old Craftsman stuff did great. I would regularly use regular deep well sockets on impact wrenches with no problem.
And, the very few times I managed to damage something, they did not even look at it, just handed me a new one.
I had a 1/2 inch ratchet that I had been using with a 3lb sledge hammer to take some lugs off and put back on and had hammered the handle so bad that it was mushroomed up to the raised emblem on both sides.
When the teeth inside finally gave up the ghost, I didn't figure I would get a freebie for that one.
The guy at the store just said that it looked like that one had seen a hard life, and handed me a brand new one.

BUT, their screwdrivers sucked back then, and still do. Worst pieces of junk I have ever tried to use, and that includes the old Globemaster brand.

Then one day I discovered Kline and sons. Don't remember ever doing any serious damage to one of those.
I still buy them, along with their nutdrivers and some other things.

Sounds like they are still good quality. Don't know about Sears any more. Personally I don't have too much problem with buying overseas stuff as long as it works. If I can support American workers without too much penalty, I will.

yup, Klines quality is still good, some of the best crimpers around...

we all remember when Craftsman was, at least, good quality... but, even at that, the tighter clearances and tolerances of Snappie can't be touched by any of them, except Mac and few good odd offerings here and there.. from sockets to screwdrivers to cold chisels to wrenches, they are THE best offerings out there in handtools, 9 out of 10 times... let alone air tools, etc..... sure, it's pricey as he!!, but when the best is needed, it's needed....

it may, or may not matter to the end user, but when I'm charging people $100 an hr for my service as a mechanic, I want them getting peak performance, efficiency and speed...

if I gotta go d*ck around for an hr because my Craftsman combo box is too bulky to take out a Caterpillar heat exchanger, why should my customer pay for it? :dunno:

When I try to type out "Crapsman" my keys just won't type it correctly. It only types out Crapsman. I think it's such a known common knowledge thing their hand tools suck and are inport now a days. Spend the money on Snap On and you will not have any regrets.

like I said, weekend's, knock yourself out.. heck, my porta power is Horrible freight, i understand..

but my 1/2 dozen carry/rigging bags? pfffffft, 95% Snappie and Mac...

All day, every day.... :doah:

btw... along with the 5/16th's nutdriver, 9/16th's wrench and #2 phillips, the above pictured Power Probe 3 is now reaching legendary status in the marine mechanic world for it's usefulness...

I will say that about 10 yrs ago SK had a nice set of deeps out that where in a med green colored plastic case.. my bud had em and they where damn good sockets... but who knows about today...

Shoot, if you don't have impact wobblies I would look into them. I use about 90% of the time, the deep and shallow set

Haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet.

I don't exactly turn wrenches for a living. Usually at the shop, when I need a wrench, its to tighten the drawbar on a bridgeport or to tighten a collet or something along those lines. Far more common for me then working on a rig. This is not to say I want chinese junk either. I have such a hodge podge of tools now. Some are excellent quality and some are bottom of the barrel and they serve their purpose as well.

I never throw away a broken tool. I can't even begin to guess how many times i've turned a broken tool into a specialty tool.

Dad and me for years and years used pittsburg sockets from harbor freight and loved them. But they too have cheaped out I can strip on of their rachets VERY easy now.

Dunno how speedy you need to get them but if you know a kid going to college to be a mechanic that would be the way to go. Most of my college buddies got all their stuff for like 50% of what anyone else had to pay.

Nice thing about my Snap-On sockets. I throw my chrome deepwells on my Impact all the time and even adapt the 3/8s up to half and put on it. Kinda funny when my tool guy asked me what I wanted a 3/8s to 1/2 adapter for. I told him to use my 3/8s on my 1/2 impact. He didnt miss a beat with the well you havn't ever bought 3/8s impact sockets.

Told him, well would you rather I break a socket, or put a 8 foot bar on my 3/8s rachet and then you have to warranty my rachet and socket. He just laughed about that.

That being said Ive beating the snot out of all my sockets and theyve held up well.

Not sure you would want to adapt 3/8s to 1/2 on that monster of an impact you have though Kert. Bad things may happen haha.

I love the impact Drey! Really appreciate that.

This.

What'd you end up picking out?

still haven't yet.

Technically speaking we don't do any wrench for our living. The most commonly used hand tool is a 3/4" to change out collets in the bridgeports. Some allen wrenches and torx wrenches for carbide inserts.

I realize snap on has the quality that's for sure. I also think their prices are just a little inflated. Other downside is, I don't think there are any snappy trucks that come around these parts. We're kinda in the middle of nowhere.

eghey is awesome for snappie.. if you know what to look for, pricing, etc... you can usually get new, or near new stuff for about 1/2 what ya pay on the truck..

but ya gotta watch, some people think they can charge truck prices too... I've seen new FULL sets of impacts go for 6, 700.. dude, I can buy it on the truck for that...

if ya don't mind the searching, etc, the deals can be had... a normal daily search of "snap on" on eghey yields about 80 pages or so... so it's a lot of schtuff... :haha:

snap on impact set 1/2, etc, etc will bring it down to a 1/2 dozen or so.. managable... :haha:
