Denatured Alcohol. Almost done painting door panels RED!! UPDATE Post#40

I don't know what to tell ya... I can't vouche for Methyl Hydrate...

I'd bet the farm my Lowes down the street sells it... how they could have acetone, and not denatured is beyond me... must be a Canadanada thing....

yeah, it's a difference between methanol and ethanol... I just can't vouche for how methanol is as far as leaving contaminants or film.... it's probably ok, but I wont say so without firsthand knowledge...

laquer thinner will work just fine. You dont need to soak the damn thing just wipe it down. Did mine this way and it did NOT eat the plastic and I got zero fish eye. For the guy that says laquer thinner will leave a residue.... Really? Guess laquer thinner is an obsolete product in the automotive finish industry? Come on dude....

who said it was an obsolete product in the industry? but it's purpose has NEVER been for panel prep.. ever...

but what the flock do I know I've only been in the biz 30 yrs......

Laquer thinner has been used for prep on nearly ALL surfaces throughout the industry for years. Denatured alcohol will work just fine. But why make the guy drive 50 miles for the stuff when laquer thinner wont hurt a thing? Just a quick wipe is going to remove any contaminates and not delaminate or blister the plastic. Sounds like a done deal to me. Good luck to the OP

bull.... washing a freshly primed panel with thinner is freakin retarded... or even an EDP coated panel.. unless you've been taught by a hack.....

why do you think they make such products as Prep-Sol, etc?

and I said earlier in the thread, "you can get away with a quickie with thinner"

I stated laquer PAINT has been outlawed in some states,NOT laquer thinner...(if it were my comments you were refering too).........................................--I also stated much of what I knew about auto paints back in the 90's is now aincient history, and might be "obsolete"....but SEM viny dye paint DID state on the label to wash all parts to be painted thouroghly with fast drying laquer thinner......................................................................................................................................................................................................When I mixed Dupont paints, they reccomended using Prep-Sol as a wash before painting--until they found in many cases the Prep-Sol left a film behind, which caused loss of adhesion and possible fisheyes..they then started telling users to wash with Prep-Sol first ,then use 3812 Enamel Reducer to wash the Prep-Sol off!...skipping that step would usually result in disspointment with the results...

I bought my denatured from Home Depot. Paint department. They are all set up the same.

Well I haven't done anything yet...

because I haven't found denatured alcohol ANYWHERE in Regina. I was even at a local paint store yesterday and they said "just use methyl hydrate" They also said that they have laquer thinner as well.

I dunno, I guess I'm going to have to look at another product... unless I plan on travelling to the USA soon to pick some up. But I would like to do this sooner than later..

My father says I should talk to autobody guys in the area to see what they use, maybe some kind of prep cleaner is out now that does the job fine. The keyword is, that this is on plastic door panels, NOT automotive metal.

:dunno:

I'll see if I can find something out...

Check my build thread and look at my interior. WAS light gray. I used laquer thinner to prep and sprayed gloss black. Looks great.

just do this.... don't worry so much about what you final wash it with.. just make sure you scrub it well with hot, soapy water a couple times before you do anything.. use an actual scuffpad if you have one, it'll knock any shine down and give it a bit of etch..

then just do a quicky with lacquer thinner, drying thoroughly... even tho it'll more than likely be fine, you can just hit a small corner section first as a test spot... the door panels are rock hard plastic so the thinner should be, as long as your not leaving a soaked rag on it, fine... if it where f*cking up, it will feel tacky when your done...

quick wet/dry with the thinner, and like I said, paper towel work well, or lint-free rags... when you spray, do the first coat, a somewhat pisscoat, where it shows thru a fair amount...

give this a decent flash time and check for signs of fisheye... follow up with 2 or 3 med/wet coats... joy.....

When I went to get the SEM paint, they recommended at that store that I use this stuff for prep:

PPG Wax and Grease Remover DX330

I think I'll just stick with something a little more simple like denatured alcohol for cleaning my plastic door panels... :doah::whistle:

I washed my door panel pieces first in the sink with hot water and Dawn detergent. Then I wiped it all down with denatured alcohol. Then I scuffed it all over with a scotch maroon pad until the entire surface looked a little "chalky". Then I wiped it down a final time with denatured alcohol to remove the scuff dust. Then I sprayed with SEM Colorcoat....it came out nice...Ryoken's instructions.

Radio Shack used to carry denatured alcohol because that's what you used to clean tape deck heads.
8-Track anyone?

So. I went to the local hardware store and bought this lacquer Thinner:

I've noticed that most of the chemicals offered in the local hardware stores (in Regina) seem to carry mainly products from this company Recochem.

Its a Canadian company and they offer many of the products we have discussed but NOT denatured alcohol...

Remember this picture? I took it at LOWES:

They are all products from Recochem. Home Depot had the same selection.

It seems that all the hardware stores are using this company as their supplier for the main household cleaning/thinning products.
So that may explain why we can't find denatured in Canada... :doah:

I am going to try the Lacquer Thinner this weekend hopefully on my door panels after a couple soapy washes. I'll test it on a corner first and go from there. Thanks to all for trying to help with this dilemma.

Started working on my door panels finally

Washed them up x2 with soapy hot water.

Using the lacquer thinner now. Dampened cloth followed by a towel dry. (Although it seems to dry on its own pretty darn quick)

Problem is I'm having STATIC issues. Seems like all the dust and particles are attracted to the door panels now. There is no way I can paint it like that.. should I get some tack cloths? Any way to alleviate this?
