We have that problem here in winter. To discharge static, I learned to ground my self before getting out of the seat of the truck. I never tried it, but maybe clip a wire from the panel to a good ground.????

yeah, stop rubbing your feet on the carpet while prepping them.....

I've seen it happen, just get it discharged and rewipe it with either a tack rag, or even one of those anti-cling sheets for the dryer... even lightly wiping it with dry paper towels should get it to discharge...

It was tough because its been cold and dry and we have 3 german shepherd dogs so there is a lot of dog hair floating around.

The trick for the static was just to wipe it down again with a warm damp cloth, let it dry quick and then quickly apply the SEM paint. Looking good so far.

I'm questioning how well it is going to hold up though. It looks basically like a rubberized coating that sticks on. A bit of a red metallic with a flat finish to it. I'm worried that the first time one of the dogs jump on the edge of the door with the window open, their bear claw nails will scratch it off.. We'll see.

did you run a scuffpad over it? yeah, it ain't gonna hold up well to dog paws... make sure you shake the he!! out of the cans...

Yep. Soapy hot water in the tub and a SOS steel wool, brush and cloth. Washed twice. Then applied the lacquer thinner a couple times. Then I had static, so warm damp cloth one more time.

I sprayed light for the first couple times. I'm probably at 4 coats now but I might add more tomorrow since some spots are still showing through.

Here is before (GM MAPLE vs GM RED)

This is after 4 coats of Red SEM colorcoat (Mixed at auto paint shop-I can get the codes if anyone wants them)

As you can see it was slightly different than the original GM red on the right, so I decided to paint both to match.

The trick is not to splatter (happens very easy, so just do short bursts with the spray can and clear the straw when you are done so it doesn't get clogged up (hold can upside down and spray a bit until no paint comes out).

The best lighting was outside at the time.

I didn't like how it had such a flat finish to it. Didn't look like factory to me. I was also concerned with how easily it seemed to peel off. Just by picking the door panel up I accidentally rubbed some of the paint off:

So, I painted it up again and hoped that it would eventually set (although skeptical... I have a german shepherd and he loves to stick his head out of the window... His name is Dawson, and he has big claws )

They look good....I can't speak to how glossy the oem was...but mine turned out good and I have handled what I have sprayed and it hasn't come off.

I don't think it says anything about a finish coat of any kind on the can either. And I used the already canned SEM Saddle Tan...mine wasn't mixed locally.

The only thing I could think of that would help may have been SEM Adhesion Promoter...but that would have went on right before paint....

For what it's worth, I bought new door panels four years ago and they were painted my color. They painted the arm rests also, and that has not stood up very well, the soft rubber flexes too much and cracks the paint.

That sucks...I haven't "road tested" mine yet...would have bought new LMC panels in the correct color if they made them for a 1974.

My panels are dark blue, the "raw" arm rests were black, and they painted them blue. The paint is all cracked now. Maybe new arm rests one of these days.

I think the clear coat will help alot with longevity and strength. I will report how it lasts over time.

The clear coat made a HUGE difference in the looks too. Looks better than factory now. More pics to come soon in above reserved posts, Deuling

You should be fine as long as you don't get your hookers at HF....
