Desert Trip 2020- Escape from everything

I'm just curious where he got that OB flag in the first place
He's been holding onto that damn flag for a couple of years now. He ordered it before our trip in '18 but it didn't come in time. He gave it to me to take last year since he was supposed to be in the sandbox then. When he came back early and we knew I couldn't go I gave it back to him. He never had a good opportunity to deploy it then.

You bastards :flipoff10:

:haha:

We already found them. Hannah has been playing with them. They had another round or two of resetting before the China's finest batteries died :haha:
How many did you find? 2 or 3?

Pretty sure 3.... behind the fridge, one in the drawer and not sure where the other came from
Third one was in the driver's side seat back pocket. I'm not sure I actually got that one turned on right. Or I did and you used as white noise to go to bed with. Who would have thought that noise wouldn't bother you?

Oh, that's right.....behind the seat. I found that one myself after you told me about it. Actually, I slept well to the cricket noises. Didn't bother me one bit. After all, we were campin in the boonies!
Should have used a noise that sounded like a squeak or a rattle. That would have driven you nuts.

I noticed none of the campers had A/C, does it cool off enough at night it is not needed or would it be a welcome relief?

Generators take up a lot of space and they're noisy.

I don't remember anybody having an AC unit in a camper. I know Larry don't and Ty don't in his silver dodge. I'm pretty sure the waggys didn't, but I didn't snoop around those much at all. Nobody was running one that I know of. Would have heard the gen set running.

Actually if you got the lids up and opened the roof vent and the windows it cools off pretty decently by bedtime. Those that had fans in the roof vent could blow the air out to help it cool down.

The temps were not horrible though. Once the sun went down it actually got chilly a couple nights. Had to break out a hoodie. What little heat that was left in my camper was welcome at that point.

thank you. I was showing the pictures to my wife and talking about how it would be fun to explore once I retire. she has had heat stroke once before and now if she gets too hot she is done for. it makes her sick, nauseated with a migraine headache and was wondering if she would be able to tolerate it.

on the other hand, might be a good excuse to go by myself :D

That's the exact reason why I was solo. My wife has MS and extreme heat will set off an episode that would likely put her in a hospital for a couple of days. Even with AC in the truck eventually, the heat, once we are parked and not running, could still set her off. She's got no issues on our mountain runs, but the desert stuff is off-limits unless I went in the winter. I'd really like to check out some areas in the winter out there eventually and my furnace keeps the camper toasty where you are sleeping in your undies and a light 40-50 degree sleeping bag.

The temps all week long were less than I expected really. The further north we were the better it was, but as we went south the temps did rise. Still, I don't remember seeing 100 degrees on my outside temp gauge in my mirror. Lunchtime on Poison Spring Canyon trail was probably the hottest we had, but later in the day with the wind blowing the temps came down. We did gain a good amount of elevation too by that night. That night was probably the coolest of them all.

It's really a timing issue. If you want cooler temps, just go out in April or May. Logistically it's easier to get the group together around June so it's when we go. Plus it tends to weed out those less crazy than us to head off into the desert in June too. We typically don't pass a lot of traffic and sure didn't this time.

A couple of us have these mini swamp coolers from Walmart or Lowes that actually works quiet well. Just keep dumping bottles of cold water in it and it cools down the camper nicely but like Rob said, we didn’t even need it this year. In fact, the evenings got down right chilly this year. Last year in Death Valley was an entirely different story….I fed this thing a few bottles of water each night.

Mine is an early version from Walmart and runs on a USB plug whereas the new version of this comes only with a 110 plug. The USB version can still be found on Evilbay though

Yeah I brought a USB powered mini-swamper with me this year. Never got it out of the cabinet. Didn't need it. Just cracked a window flap near my head for some fresh air.

But I would bet that @fourwheelerjeff is not familiar with a swamp cooler, just swamp butt, since he lives in Texas.
:haha:

Seriously though, I have talked with people who just don't comprehend how the temperature can get low enough quickly after dark, and how humidity under 15% can make daytime temperatures in the 90* range tolerable with just a little air movement.

I am familiar with both. :D

growing up we had swamp coolers for a while until my Dad remodeled the house. when I first got married right after high school we had a swamp cooler, I used to buy bags of ice and dump in it to make the water colder. then I had to stand in front of it to get any relief. :haha:

central air is where it is at

Finally had a chance to really read through the report Rob. Nice job documenting everything before we forget things here and there. Its always fun looking back at old trip reports and reading things that jog memories years later. This report will be no different in the years to come.

You’re right in what you said though. We were lucky that when the K10 broke, we had all the right people in the right places. I wouldn’t wanted it any other way…. You, Ty and Ian right there with me and Bill at home to bring the Rescue Waggy. And, despite the reason for our car-pooling 400+ miles back home, it was a fun time to spend a day and a half on the road together like the old days being totally unfiltered and politically incorrect. Fun time!

Speaking of memories, here are reports from years past. Every time I read through these they remind me of something I had forgotten.

2019 I never did one as I never had time and Rob wasn't able to go... Best I can do is offer up the photo gallery and SPOT summary :haha:

Prior years trip reports were over on Expedition Portal :surepal:. I don't know why, but the thought of Expedition Portal these days makes me want to puke in my mouth a little. It was a really neat forum years ago before the whole "Expo" thang exploded and "Overlanders" became such a cult of weird motherfubber sheaple with more money than brains.

2011. Doesn’t look like I did a dedicated trip report that year other than this.....

Great idea posting links to past years trips. Went down the rabbit hole reading the early years and 2014 where you climbed up the Flint switchbacks for the first time, under normal power and not being towed like this time around. Pretty cool to be able to recognize the area without being on that trip.

Boy, politically incorrect is a great description of the ride home. It was all pretty funny. It did seem odd with you in the passenger seat as it has been me riding along in your truck. Outside of going to get pizza one night in my truck it's the longest you've traveled in it.

Looking forward to the next run, where ever it might take the crew.
