Shakin down new CUCV 1 ton , rebuilt 205(by me with ORD kit) install
First thing, CLUNCK!
HMMMM, lotta drivetrian slop, 1/3 driveshaft turn. Reasearch- common for Detroit, even on Eaton website FAQ
OK, next, drivin round town. Everything good, but on deceleration, freewheeling sound can feel it in 205 shifter. First thoughts, linkage, shift collar not staying engaged.
Check linkage ADJ, good, getting to detent no prob. The more I tinker/drive it, the more it feels/seems like its the Detroit disengaging. With careful throttle control I can almost eliminate the issue. Any input, ideas or ways to check/test welcome.

As long as you’re not getting slop before the diff, I’d say that’s about how my old Detroit acted. I believe it was one of the early series ones

Is the Detroit new? I have a Yukon Grizzly (similar design) in my 14 bolt and it quieted down a bunch after a few thousand miles. I still get a random loud thunk every now and then.
Also what seemed to help was going from a 35" tire to a 37". The 35's would chirp around corners but the 37's seem to absorb it better.
My truck is a stick and I kind of coast around corners, but never push in the clutch.

Detroit is original to axle, 84, 85?
Hard to say with CUCV stuff
Anyway, I've had Spartans in several 10 and 12 bolts and they had some slop but this is much more. I'm familiar with the turning, backup, etc quirks with lunchbox lockers, but going straight and just letting off the throttle causing it to disengage? The slightest throttle input and it re engages. Feels so wierd

:haha::biggrin: so they really are that bad?
I'll look into an alternative, can't afford a selectable rite now but i know it'll cost me twice. Just gotta get up and running to shake everything else down

1 thing that's different is I'm not having the slow speed/turning issues that are well known for Detroits. It's only showing when going straight, decelerating from like 35, 40 mph. Which may be a thing but this is my 1st Detroit lunchbox.

Thanks for the input
I'm gonna check the fluid for for debris Need to anyway for 500 mi gear break in
If nothing super bad ill run it.
If it fails, oh well it's just a 14 bolt ff not like there's no more out there :D

Never cared for detroit locker for many reasons .

There nice and BEFFY for sure but loud / handle funky in short vehicles / for me sucked in any amount of snow on the street .

Sold it and went back to the G80 gov-lok and love it in my 14ff rear .

Yep, if a gov lock set up comes up I'll probably grab it. This rig is not hardcore enough to need much more. Of course, until MAW kicks in
:D

I’ll be honest, I don’t even know my Detroit is back there. I’m an auto on 37’s with 4.88’s. The thing is quiet with no issues. Rarely have an issue barking around corners and no clunks or thunks. But mine also has maybe 300 miles on it.

Same here, 37's, 4.56's, th350
Until I'm off throttle at 35 to 40 mph, then it's freewheeling unless i press the gas, even just a bit. Never had this before

You have the new soft locker version. Cucv detroits are very aggressive.

Lots of research today. Seems like Detroits are 1 of those things that have 2 camps
"Scary, lots of probs, noisy" etc
Or
"Mine runs fine, no issues, like its not there"
And i think there's truth 2 both.
1 thing both agree on- wet/snow
Scary! Makes sense
Thing is they operate based on different input from each tire so age of locker, axle, tires, vehicle weight transfer, driving style, etc etc will all effect end result. Thus all the different opinions you hear from peeps. Did the normal auto locker test today-fine.
Checked rear tires circumference-fine
Brake drag per side-fine
So, as long as it doesn't put a lot of shavings/debris in the diff, I'll run it.

Thanks for the input guys, if anything changes I'll update.

If I let up,then go, particularly in a turn, the passenger will look at me with wide eyes like the rear end just exploded. Its that on off on throttle that makes them talk. i just changed the gear oil after about 5K miles, dunked the axles a few times this summer, and while the rear was not as clean as the front, the gears looked good.
