I just picked up this puppy today from my cousin for $750.
Its a 6 speed, has reverse, and electric start and pull start!!!

Im diggin it, any sweet cheap mods for these??? I have never owned a quad or any toy like this for that matter, things to look for, watch out for??

I dont like the short wheel base very much, im hoping that someday I will be able to extend the A-Arms or the rear and give it a bit longer wheel base.

Plans for now, make some nerf bars so my legs dont get sucke in by the rear tires, and make a new front bumper, both things I can do for free because I can get pipe from work, and I have an untouched 16 ton pipe bender just calling my name!!!

Make the nerfs out of Aluminum, weight is everything on a quad and a warrior is already a heavy bike. as for mods theres not much out there for them, Pipe and jet kit and cam there is one company that makes a big bore kit but its probally more then you payed for the bike.

I say just ride it as is and learn the ropes and then upgrade to bigger bike

warriors are stone axe reliable , with exception to the tie rod ends lol I broke 7 in one riding season

Thats my 88 Warrior in the bed, she don't get much ride time anymore mostly used when we have a new rider we want to break in, its a very forgiving bike and reverse is nice

Yah its not like a crazy fast bike or anything nor do I expect it to be, but im not a speed junkie anyways. Ive just always wanted one and its gonna look sick in the back of the K5 up at the dunes.

What fuel, oil, and other things should I be running? No idea lol.

Just regular unleaded, as for Oil yamalube.

PJ1 filter oil and Chain Oil

Diggin way back in the brain now...

the warrior is 9:1, so 87 octane is perfect.
I second the PJ1 filter oil, or spectro filter oil. If you need a new filter, I highly recommend going with a UNI filter and clamp on kit. This allows for a much better seal on the filter as the stock set up is kinda goofy. It also allows you the option of taking the airbox lid off. Something you can do for more power with proper jetting.
As for oil, just use some Honda or Yamaha regular oil. Once you start getting into fancy oils, you need to make sure it's suitable for the trans, as it's all one system. Some oils are no good for the trans.
I wouldn't spend the money on A-arms, unless you can get them second hand and cheap. With wider A-arms, comes the need for new shocks to handle the wider ratio. You can adjust the stockers tight, but it's only soso. The rear rims are offset. You can flip them inside out and gain about 2" overall in the back. The warrior is tiny feeling, so all this stuff helps, but there's nothing like getting on a larger bike.
www.RockyMountainATV.com is your friend :waytogo:

and for the life of me I can't find any pictures of my warrior :doah: So here's what I have now. Minus some recent parts.

My 2003 warrior mods: (if you are interested in any of them or outcomes)

JE 30 over 10.75:1 piston
WEBCAM 390 (if I still had the bike, I'd step up to the 440)
WB Valve springs
Undercut stock valves
Ported
Custom Oil Cooler (they don't come with oil coolers :D:waytogo::waytogo:)
Pro Circuit T-4 slip on pipe (you don't need a header for the warrior)
UNI clamp on filter kit with billet adapter, no airbox lid
DynoJet Needle (don't buy a jet kit, just buy a GYTR/ Dynojet needle and individual Mikuni mains)
Works Triple Rate front shocks
DG Nerfs (come on man, they are aluminum and $99 bucks, pony up for something nice)
Trail Tech handlebar lights and dash
Armadillo skid plates (best bang for your buck, 1/4" thick and cheaper than the other companies)
stock black and red plastics minus the WARNING emblems (god I hate those)
and probably some other crap I'm forgetting.

Dang it lol dont give me all these ideas! lol i need to focus my money on the truck lol. Ill stop into the local shop and get oil, plug, and filter, and i need a new chain roller.

In the dunes the tierod ends may be fine, but as mentioned they break. One of the guys I used to ride with broke 2 in one trip then broke another the very next trip. I'd upgrade them if possible(should be cheap) or at least keep an extra set handy.

Hey how do you do the oil cooler setup??? I think that would be a good Idea seeing they have no cooling system...

And with the nerf bars I only weigh 145lbs so I think 5lbs of half inch steel pipe for free compared to $100 to buy some alluminums that weigh one pound... I will make them removable so if it really affects it that bad it will be a bolt or 2, no big deal. At the moment its def on a budget because I cant afford to spend much on it lol, I need to focus on the truck for sure.

my toy

1987 suzuki lt500r quadracer ( QUADZILLA )

stock motor inside
duncan racing cool head stock cc dome.
39mm kehin carb jetted to match system.
duncan racing/paul turner race exaust.
vp race gas c12 mix 108 leaded

stock 40 hp at wheels.
now 60 hp at wheels.

next mod will be port job on the jug.

lowest sprocket ratio for gearing slow speed more trail friendly.

pic little old still crappy dg exaust/head in the pic but bike still the same

Nice!! I whipped my first wheelie today in the field behind work lol, I put some sea foam through it and it kicked in lol, ok it may have been an accidental wheelie lol. Runnin much better and ill get some tune up stuff for it tomorrow hopefully

there are two different ways to add an oil cooler

1) Put a Yamaha BigBear (IIRC) oil filter cover with oil cooler lines on. It takes some parts gathering. Some people like the simplicity, but some don't like where it takes pressure from.

2) Drill into clutch cover, separate oil channel into two, one line to cooler and one coming back into clutch cover. This is the method I used, cause it's cheaper and runs right off the oil pump and into the head. This takes more effort, bu cheaper than buying new parts from the dealership.

When I get a second, I'll take some pictures of my warrior and oil cooler.

The 22" tires are great for trails, around here anyway. But 20s are better for everywhere else, especially desert and less rutted areas. Go up one tooth on the front and the change is great.

yah man get me some pics, got the day off today, headin up to work for my grandpa again, and it finally stopped raining so hopefully Ill get to take it out for a bit. It fits so perfect in my van lol, and because the van is so low I can just roll it in myself really easily, much nicer than a big pickup.

And you guys said I couldnt make my own nerf bars lol. Made them for free, they are perfectly semetrical and maybe weigh 6lbs. I think they turned out really nice and I got to play with the pipe bender for the first time and got to do some welding :thumb:

All I need now is some sort of nylon strap material and to weld the mounting brackets onto it.

At $100 for the cheapest ones out their and the hour maybe it took to make these I ot to sell these SOB's!!!

Wow I totally wung it and didnt look at any designs and look how similar they are to these. Maybe I should be a pipe fitter after all lol

Also picked up this HJC today, MSRP: $154, It was on the clearance rack for $64 brand new still, fits great and has every color that the quad does!!!

Those bars look good, and nice find on that helmet! :waytogo:

Thanks Man!! Im pretty happy about all of it. Betcha cant even see where the welds are lol. Rode 14 miles yesterday, and rode some more today, I can beat my buddy on his 250 dirt bike out of the hole up to about 4th gear, then he smokes me, but oh well.
