But slipping clutches was deemed bad a while ago I believe lol. Figured they'd have checked that one off the board by now.

Engineers trying to find that .001mpg. I tune that crap out and have zero actual effect to the mileage.
 
The clutch slip during gear change was a 'feature' to reduce shock to the driveline. Its tied to the 'torque management' programming.
 
True. I was looking at it as just driving around with the converter locked all day for any gain in mileage possible which requires the converter to be slipped during certain events.
