Ok, my new tailgate arrived today from Discountbodyparts.com. It was well packaged, a box in a box, in a box, and the second box had bubblewrap on the ends in an effort to protect the corners and ends. The only damage I found was a dent in the skin, probably cause by a rubber block that was between it and the box. Minor. The opening for the window was not just like factory, but will be covered by the rubber caps so it doesn't hurt. Metal thickness was the same as the factory as best I can measure. It appears to be a pretty good item. Cost was $156 delived to my shop.

For 150 bucks, that doesn't look too bad...

The whole reason I would buy panels and such is so I dont have to do any body work, just paint and install. If I gotta use some bondo to make new panels look right ill just save my money and fix the current ones...

I think chevy305 got a cowl hood from some company and it had a dent or something and he actually got the company to pay an autoshop to fix and paint I beleive.. Maybe worth a try :dunno:

I don't like the dent, but it's not as bad as it appears. Most of it will pop out. And with used tailgates going for over $250 around here and needing rust repairs and all the guides and weatherstripping, I feel this was the best deal. I have to order all the guides and etc. for what ever gate I used, so this isn't all that bad.

LKQ delivered the THIRD GoodMark tailgate to me today....I sent it back and told them I wanted a refund.
It had multiple dents in it and waves....I was just disgusted...I can't believe you can't get a straight tailgate....
What do your weld joints look like on top on both ends of the glass slot?

On the later years, there is a rubber cap that goes on top of the tailgate between the tailgate and the removable top. So, it really doesn't make much difference. But they don't look too bad compared to the original.

I bet they come from the same Taiwan factory...looks exactly like the one I un-boxed today.

I hope that if I just clean up the rust real good and treat it and use the Duraglas, I won't see the rust for a long, long time...it makes me angry that we don't have US Steel anymore.

I don't doubt it. Mine's got a big "Made in Tiawan" sticker on it. But I don't think I could have fixed my old one. Not a lot of rust on the shell, but the panel that the regulator mounts to has about an inch rusted off the bottom of it. That was allowing the glass to contact the regulator and has scratched it right in the middle. I'm going to attempt to polish what I can out of the glass.

Give Ryoken a yell...I remember him saying something about how to polish glass to make it look like new.

Ryoken, " just a wheel with super duty compound, then some finesse does wonders"....

From what Ive heard about most aftermarket body parts its hit or miss as to whether or not you will have to do body work. Generally you'll have better luck from higher end parts but sometimes there will still be work involved. Ive even seen a disclaimer on some new body panels that repair work may be involved because of shipping damage and that the company is not liable for damaged panels.:dunno:

I think they really tried to prevent shipping damage. That rubber block, turns out to be three rubber blocks. There were two more in the bottom of the box. It appears they were put on the bottom flange, but slipped off during shipping.
Shipping is a problem. I used to build custom fishing rods and shipped them in PVC pipe. UPS still managed to break a few rods.

An update: Since my original tailgate rusted across the inside bottom, I decided to treat the new one with Eastwood internal frame coating. I sprayed the inside bottom third of the new tailgate, putting on a good heavy coat. After turning the tailgate over, I discovered the outer shell and the inner shell, where they are spot welded together have a gap between welds. The heavy spray I applied had actually run out the gap. It should be well treated for rust.
Also, when LMC says there are two rubber window stops needed inside the tailgate, they forgot to say that the first one is wasted when the little tit pulls off when installing. And the second needs to be trimmed an eighth of an inch so the tit won't pull off when installing. There is only one place in the factory or the replacement tailgate for the window stop.

I bought a new tailgate for $300 4 years ago from by buddy who owns a body shop. At the time that was his price. He still has it as I am now just starting to rebuild my 84' blazer. He told me when he took it out of the box they had to do body work to it as it was not straight. At the time it was supposed to be the best quality one that could be bought. He tells me every single new body panel he gets in he has to do body work. Even the factory panels he uses that come direct from the car maker.

Well, my "cheap" tailgate has turned into quite a work of art. Most of the nuts welded in place are metric where my original were good old American. I have had to re-tap most of them. And razor sharp edges everywhere! Finally got it on the Blazer, it's got to be "fitted" before painting. I wanted to get a weight differenc between the old and new, but found someone had welded an outer skin over the damaged original skin. That added lots of weight. I will say, that the torque rods will close the tailgate if you let it go before it's all the way open. I do not have the regulator and glass in yet, so hopefully it will be balanced or a little heavy.
The best weld theTiawan factory made is in the wrong place. The tabs that go into the sides of the beds are about a quarter inch high. I guess I will grind them down. Ryoken...opinion???? The old gate the tabs were 2" from the top of the tailgate, the new ones are 1-5/8" and hit hard at the top of the slots.

wow sounds like alot of work and not good quality. Id rather get it shipped in pieces and weld it myself, it would look a ton better than that :waytogo:
