Need to fix the frame at the steering box..DIY??

What about gas? Will today's gas screw it up??
Should I run additive? What type?

Motor oil, non detergent??

Probably gonna throw a Lock right in the back

How strong is the 44? Running 33's and plan on mostly desert exploring with it.

Want to keep it as reliable as possible. No fuel injection or ECU.
Want to be able to fix it out in the middle of the desert. I'll carry spare everything... Carb, coil, distributor, plug, wires, and so on...

Not sure about the tie downs on the front.

Couldn't figure out how to bolt up the top, so I just strapped it down for the ride home. I've since figured out the top..

First off,NICE TRUCK!...I had a '72 K5 and a '71 K5 CST years ago..

I'd run regular non-synthetic detergent oil unless you know for certain it had non-detergent oil used in it for a long time..judging by its condition I doubt the previous owners used anything but good oil in it...15W-40 diesel rated oil has more ZDDP in its additives to help keep the flat tappet cam lobes from wearing down, many of today's other oils dont,so be wary of what you use..

Today's ethanol gas can cause the old hoses to fail and it tends to loosen up any crud in the fuel system..it would be wise to replace the rubber hoses from the tank to the carb to avoid any failures and possible fires or hazards..

I'm not much help on the axles or repairing the frame at the box,I never had any issues with the dana 44 in my 1/2 tons, but all I did was street driving and plowing,no off roading really, but those old Fisher plows aren't lightweights and I never broke any axles or bent housings....never had to fix a frame at the box yet either,I guess the Fisher plow frames I had on my trucks beefed the frame up enough to prevent any stress from cracking them there..

Yes indeed nice looking rig. From what you described about your use the 44 should be fine. I run one and it had held up nicely for years untouched with mild wheeling. I still run it, only it is fortified a wee bit now as I treat it a wee bit harder. Steering box area, offroad design makes a weld on repair and also a bolt on brace. I would recommend both as that is a very weak and vulnerable area of your frame.

So what fluids are best for the transfer case and the transmission??

4 speed stick.

I assume regular diff oil is ok??

Been having fun with surprises...
Went to do axle seals, bearings and brakes..
Found a nice striped out wheel stud.

And, all better...
