Do I need a conversion U-Joint?

Well guys I pulled the cover yesterday and resealed it with black RTV. I gave it time to set and its holding just fine. I also ordered a new slip yoke and u joint for the the tcase rear output. I think while I do that I might as well split the tcase and reseal it. Do I have to drop it or can I split it in place?

In place is fine. Are you just removing the tail shaft? Or splitting the whole case?

If splitting the whole case id recommend removing the tail shaft before reinstalling the case half. There are some springs in there that you pretty much need that access to hold while reinstalling if the case isn't on a bench facing up.

I'm going to do both. I have oil weeps from both seams.

For those springs you mention, would it just be easier to drop the case and do it on the bench or still manageable in the truck?

Also what kind of RTV is recommended? I usually use Black for everything oil related but ATF is a little different.

Did mine under it, but i was standing in a pit so that was nice. If you have the cone off you can hold the springs in place as you put the outer half on. On a bench would be easiest though. Also while its out, replace all three input/output seals.

I pulled mine 3 seperate times as each went. That was dumb. 30 year old seals turn to what feels like hard plastic and they crack.

I like to use the "ultra black" for anything that gets warm. It seems to hold up better and doesn't smell so darn strong when you apply it.

This is the stuff I use:

Permatex has a "special" silicone just for ATF out now..saw it at Pep Boys today, there is also one specific for gear oil too now, that "resists friction modifiers"..

Been quite some time since I sold or bought any RTV,and was pretty amazed at how many new ones there are now...when I worked parts stores all there was for RTV was "Ultra Blue"and "Hi Temp Orange",now there must be 20 different ones--"Ultra Gray","Ultra Black",and a few that are "gasket makers",while others are "adhesive-sealants".:eek1:..and the "Right Stuff",which I was thinking of buying ,till I saw the price...14 bucks for a cheese whizz like can, that will likely harden up after the first use,is too rich for my blood,sorry!..:screwy:..
