Do I need a new starter or is it loose?

Sorry for all the questions tonight!

This is happeneing more and more often... I have to hit the starter while someone turns the key to get this thing to fire up. It tends to happen after I have been driving a while. The starter still works, but it needs a beating to get going... like me in the morning.

Anyone know the issue?

Is the wiring loose or rotted?

If your wiring looks good and the starter bolts are tight - then my guess would be bad brushes. Time for a new starter.

Endplay in the armature. If you can wiggle the end w/the bendix back/forth, the bushings are wore out and tries to lay down on the field of the casing. Hitting w/hammer jars it off to get some more spin. Need new starter or rebuild that one.

May have worded the reply incorrectly. Endplay as in "side to side" not lengthwise. Bushings that hold the armature ends letting it fall down and short armature to field. Make sense?
