I was just wondering because some people have told me that the 350 will not be able to push 40" tires.

It will but not like you want. That's a lot of rolling mass to push around with w/e horsepower that motor came with. I had a pretty much stock 350 in this truck with 39.5's

Also gearing and tranny are a big factor also

BTW this truck had 4.11's and the 4 speed manual. could turn the tires over but it lacked power in some areas

I am sure it will if you have the right gears.
I run 39.5" Iroks with a very worn out 305 through 4.56 gears and it goes just fine, although not very fast.

So If I'm putting 40"'s on it should I supercharge the motor? put a new motor? I'm thinking 4.11' gears it has the 350 turbo tranny . Is there anything else I could do to the engine?

yeah kinda what i was gettin at. gears make a HUGE difference.

If you have 3.08's you may definately be in trouble

you could do all kinds of things. Depending on what you actually do with it. DD needs i'd say went out the window with 40" tires but i may be wrong.

If it wer me and it was a toy i'd go 4.56's or better. Just puts less strain on the motor. Turns the tires over easier.

Going to have to agree, I'm running 42's with a stock 350/SM465 and 410's
and it will move but like stated previously, it will be less power than you'd like.

hello fellow ny brother. nice to see others. and man you are up there compared to me.

I run 42s with hummer double beadlocks (heavy) with 456s and a doubler... I can roast the tires when needed, the engine is pretty much stock except the headers. It is a 350 out of a 95 3/4 ton.
gabe

It's been said a few times and I agree, you'll want to re-gear the axles. IMO 4.10's aren't low enough...

With your TH350 in 3rd and 4.88's with 40" tires you'll be spinning approx. 2,650 rpm at 65mph which is fine so I'd suggest 4.56's if you are on the street most of the time but I think you'll be happier with 4.88's.

Don't waste your time with a "supercharger" or anything like that. Put your money into the proper gears, lockers, suspension, etc.
Which btw what are you're plans for axles? If you have a TH350 I'd assume we're probably talking about a k10/k5 so 10b's probably aren't going to like a 40" tire, even on the street.

dont worry about the engine. if you run an extremely powerful engine with high gears and huge tires youre just going to slowly break your drivetrain. id go with 4.56 axle gears an sm465 or nv4500 and a doubler would be ideal.IMO

flatblackburb is one of my buddys and he ran 40s with his 350 and it had pleanty of power. it had 4.10s and it was a stock motor. older motors might not be able to but his did just fine.

i ran 38s with a 305 2:1 case and 273 gears and had fun with that truck for a year

run the stock motor it'll do fine I'd just save up for some lower gears and have fun I ran 40's on a stock TBI 350 with a 700R4 and a NV241 with 4.56's it was a good combo never lacked for power

also with his user name says 1980beast so if its a 1/2 ton it would have a 12 bolt rear and 10 bolt front

1980 is a weird year for these trucks lots of different stuff

I ran 40 mudders with 4;56s and stock 350 with headers and dual exhaust on an 80 3/4 ton chevy for over 40K miles till I wore all the tread off the tires. Then went to 44s with 5:13 gears lockers front and rear. I had enough power to do a tug of war ( with a 100hp.shot of nitrous ) to beat a built 460 cu. in. ford at the Richfield Colisium back in 85.
Tarey

ok then heres my 2-cents worth leave the motor alone for know find a set of Military CUCV axles ( one ton GM ) they have a 4.56's and the rear has a detroit you'll have to relocate the spring mounts on the rear but its no big deal

40's are alot of strain on 1/2 tons so until you upgrade stick to 35" tires and be nice to it lol

when that all done Buy a Mild cam intake and headers for your motor and good ignition components and have fun

if you budget right and search for the deals you can do the whole project wih tires for around 3500 bucks start reading up on hear theres alot of good info and good people
