Does everyone have a darn 14ff/d60!!!!

10b/12b combo from 79 K15. 3.42 gears. Yukon shafts and lock-rite in front axle (all used, $500 total build cost). Rear has Superior shafts and a richmond mini-spool. About $400 in it. Should be good for up to 36" tires. The K5 is a driver and I plan to keep it that way. Eventually re-gear to 4.56 when I wear out my 33's and get some 35-36" tires.

i just watched craigslist, i bought a 76 parts truck with 44/14ff axles in a rolling chassis with a th350/203 for $400... turns out they had 4:56's in them, since the truck had no motor or front clip everyone stayed away, i gambled and won, i ran those until i bought a dually 60 for $300 bucks sight unseen, turns out it also had 4:56's and i bought some srw outers and bolted it in and went , no rebuild, i didnt pout another dime into either one until i went 5:38's and rebuilt both ( wow that was exspensive!)

i have been running my first 60 since i got it almost 10 years ago. swaped on srw hubs and cleaned repacked the bearings. still on same calipers. also havent even had to put a ujoint in the shafts yet. its had 35" and 38" tires on it all its life i have had it.

close to a year after i got it tho i had to rebuild the king pins minus the upper pin its self. otherwise i just flushed the old oil out and refilled the diff up and still going strong.

its also got lots of snow plow miles on it and in its second truck now . and lived all its life in the rust belt . she is nice and crusty :eek1:

most of the time i hear guys saying thay need to rebuild the whole thing just to find out a basic service was all thats needed. hack i still run stock 30 spline outer shafts.

Same here, I recently replaced the brake pads out of guilt, they still had life left. 5 years and counting. Not rusty here, but a testament to how strong these things really are.

It's not like a full rebuild is all that intensive anyway right? New seals, gaskets, oil, bearings and races and that's pretty much it to an axle isn't it?

you ever price timkin bearings and races for just the wheel position on the 60 :eek1:

just pull them / clean them and inspect them if good then repack and smack a seal in place and run them.

read up here on how to check and understand bearing wear. can save you hundreds on not needed parts. http://www.timken.com/en-us/products/maintdiag/Documents/6347.pdf

ahahahaha
I'm amazed the quote is the second post of this 2 year old thread. Go spammer go! lol

I'll jump in.

I've got 4 sets of GM 1 tons. 2 sets of 60/14's and 2 sets of 60/70's.

The 5th set of 1 tons I have is a 60/70 under my '75 Highboy.

And then there are the H1 wheels and runflats I have stockpiled in the corner of my shop. Around 35-ish give or take. :doah:
