Does your Blazer suck in the snow/ice

My burb was absolutely a hoot in the winter time.

I couldn't hook up on anything unless there was sand/salt on the roads, dry roads, or deep untouched roads.

Packed snow, and ice would give me ZERO traction. It's fun in a straight line with no stop signs, but anything other then that was ridiculous...

I'd have a line up of like 7-11 cars everyday coming home from work because all I could do was spin the tires or idle everywhere.:haha:

Oh yeah 35x14.5 Bias super swwampers.

All that said I like my BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A tires. I need to get that review I did posted. If I go west next year we will see how Goodyear does!

I have the BFG AT/KO's on my wifes jeep. Love them in the snow & ice.
I just wonder how the MT ATZ Plus do in the snow & ice. I'm going to NE Ohio for Christmas week.

Buffalo has't gotten that much snow yet... i'm running 235/85-16 open country M/T's on my turck... they're too small for anything other than dry pavement or ice - hell, i got stuck in my parent's front yard after slipping 1 tire off the driveway... welded rear, open front... i just bought a set of 315/75 16 BFG M/T's, so we'll see how that goes...
 
the blazer is parked this winter. im driving my bonneville with bald tires. im going to get some new tires when my check comes. i was thinking about getting the snow/ice tires on tirerack for 53 bucks a piece and just put them on the front. i cant drive the blazer in snow its a little scary
 
I have the Big-O X/T's that performed well in the ice and snow we got the other day. I can't tell you how many wrecks there were from people who didn't know how to handle the ice, or just plain didn't prepare for it.

Yes, I slowed down a bit, but overall the tires have a good siping pattern in the lugs and they tend to grip well. I had to blip the throttle to get the tires to break loose, even on straight ice. Braking is another story however, but I plan ahead as much as possible.
 
i couldnt get my blazer to stop worth a damn. im not used to the non abs yet. i remember sliding for days....

its icing and snowing here right now
 
Snow is supposed to hit tonight while I am at work.

Braking is easy:

1. Plan ahead
2. Apply light brake pressure, but keep it steady, don't pump the brakes
3. Slowly arrive at the stop sign and stop.

I have never driven a vehicle with ABS during the winter, other than my wife's Beretta, and they barely worked on it. Nothing to relearn when you are so old that the first vehicle you got was a 73 Beetle with drums all the way around.
 
we've gotten our first real snow/ice here this weekend. i've been VERY pleased with my radial TSL's road manners in this stuff. i've got a manual trans, and i just avoid using the brakes as much as possible, and haven't slid at all. perhaps you should try using your transmission to slow down so you don't risk lock up and losing traction.
 
Sooooo..you must live in the damn tundra...

im just asking on the tires..besides we get snow locally
 
Ok after aday in a little ice and more snow and a mixture all night i am happy with my 85 K5. I running 32" BFG mudder with half tread and they did fine. I will say breaking was not easy it slide pretty easy but with going slow and useing the gears if did fine. My tires are air down but they work gret in the snow and ice today. With a 350 .40 over i could slide and spin easy but win i lifted off the gas tire reacted great. 32 BFG Mudder air down good enough for me!!!:D:bow:
 
my k5 seems to do really good. i got some half bald 38 12.50 tsls and do good. even stoping. going to back into the driveway i slammed on the brakes to try to slide and get sideways, stoped almost like it was just wet out in 2 inches of snow.
 
Okay, here are my tips. I run studded tires in the winter and ever with them, things can get hairy at times.

#1 Slow down on snow and ice.... I mean that is just safe driving in ANY vehicle

#2 Slow down and don't be a retard that says "I'm safe because I have 4 wheel drive." No matter what vehicle you drive, ice will get you and speed will teach you that.

#3 Weigh down the back end. My K5 did really well at first with these tires but I am having problems now. The only thing that has changed is that I took a crap load of firewood out of the back that I was hauling around for hunting camp. With the wood loaded up in the back (wasn't a lot either and below the rear seat level) I got around better in 2x4 than my buddy's 94 Chevy pu that had better tires when he was in 4x4.

#4 Whoever said "plan in advance" is well worth listening to. You have to remember that in rigs that weigh this much when it comes to ice. Ummmm HELLO! IT'S ICE!!!!! The best tires in the world aren't going to stop you on ice when you are going too fast. See rule #1 and #2......

#5 Invest in a set of tire chains. You want chains on the front especially for stopping and turning. I got in a situation in ice that I had to chain up 1 tire to get out. Would have done the other side but I couldn't get to it because it was burried in snow and in a ditch.

#6 Carry around a bag of kitty litter. When stuck on ice, it actually helps with traction as well as helps weigh down the back end.

I've gotten sideways on the sides of mountains twice this year already. Granted these are old logging roads that the Forest Service keeps open during hunting season, but I should have been smart and spent the time and chained up. Had I gone over the edge in one situation, there is no doubt in my mind that I would be dead right now. The hill is that steep and there wasn't anything to really stop me from rolling 1000 feet down the side of the mountain. Better tires may have helped but I was being stupid. I was going to fast for the road conditions on a road I was not used to driving and I came around a corner too fast. 5 mph faster and I'd be dead because I was being stupid and thinking "I have studded tires and 4x4."

In my mind, good driving skills are more important than good tires in this type of weather. I see plenty of idiots with awesome tires in the ditch every year. Actually, I am planning on a junkyard run to see what's new there lmao
