Electric pump for a lift pump

Maybe in pickups that had switched to the new body style with IFS, but to the best of knowledge the Blazers, Suburbans, and some trucks that retained the old body style through '91 had a mechanical lift pump. My '90 K5 with the 6.2 came with the engine mounted mechanical pump.

AFAIK electric pumps weren't used until 94 when GM went to the electronic DS4 pumps.

You have to take what Autozone says with a grain of salt. If you ask for parts for the front axle of a '77 1-ton, which everybody knows was the first year of the D60, they show all D44 parts in their computer. I also can't count the number of incorrect parts they have in their computer for my '90 Blazer, which is obviously the "old" style, in which they try to give you stuff for the new style IFS trucks.

FYI: the fuel pump for a '91 Blazer or Suburban definitely pictures a mechanical pump and the price reflects that, while if you pull up a '91 pickup (which would be the the "newer" style with IFS) is shows an electric and price is several times higher and this part is the same if you go back to '88 which is the first year for the new style. So it appears that my original thought (I get lucky every once in awhile) was correct in which the 6.2's in trucks that retained the older style kept the mechanical pump while the new styles went electric.

Well, seems that none of us was correct. :D  :o ;)
All I have to verify was the autozone repair info though http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairLanding.htm

According to the Autozone instructions, 1991 they changed to electric fuel pumps on diesel engines.

Rock Auto site shows the same info for the 6.2. old body styles, ie Jimmy in 91, shows mechanical pump, while new body style shows electric pump. they have lots of errors too.

Seems that this is only one more strange animal on gm rigs during the changing years. Would be an interesting new thread to list all of the oddballs . . .

Alrighty, drug the CUCV out this week for some work and Im starting on modding the fuel system to mount a K5 tank in the bed. Got to looking at pumps on the net. Found where some guys were noting some performance gains from slight fuel pressure increases. Stock lift pump was 6-8psi and they were saying that around 20psi they started blowing seals in the IP at idle.

So I got to looking and on the 98 (probably others) Hummer H1 with the 6.5TD they have an inline lift pump that operates at 10-14psi. I got one on order at autozone, should be here tomorrow and its $56. We'll see how it works.

Pulled the lift pump off the block and got all kinds of black crap out of it. Thats probably why it ran so crappy when I did have it running. Put on a blockoff plate for a BBC and rerouted the lines, and now I have a massive fuel filter on the firewall.
