Hey Guys,

So I'm giving the truck a once over trying to clean up some of the previous owners handy work. Truck is an 87 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4.
It appears the he attempt to splice some wires together. #1 goes from alternator bracket to splice. #2 goes from splice to ground on grill/rad support. #3 goes from splice to negative on battery. No other wires are connected to battery ground. If vehicle is running (after boost) wire going to negative on battery extremely hot (Some kind of stereo gauge wire )!
On that note even when vehicle is running, minimal light and power to move windows.
Ideas.
#1 Check alternator output
#2 Replace battery (from 1812)
#3 Replace/sort out wiring for negative and alternator bracket ground

Any suggestions on how the proper wiring should be?

Battery ground should go to Alt bracket, I'm thinking 87 still has the passenger side alt. If it's full serpentine I'm not sure, but somewhere to the engine block for sure.

There should be a 10 or 12 guage wire from batt ground to the radiator support. There should be a ground strap or two from engine block to the body.

1812 was a very bad year for batteries. I would replace it for sure..

Thanks for your reply again! Gotta love the time zone difference :)
Alternator is on passanger side. I'll take a couple pictures and post them up or do I have to be a VIP member?

Photobucket seems to be the choice around here...then remote link using the img tags.

Just curious but what issues will be caused by no ground strap from block to firewall or body?

Possible issues with ALL body grounded systems since the negative battery cable grounds to the engine and there are rubber engine mounts so not a very good ground to the body.

So a bit of an update... No grounding straps off engine other then above mentioned and battery leaking. Went to CT and picked up a new battery and some new wires for main battery leads and etc. My buddy Nat came over to give me a hand (leg issues) so we wired things up as suggested above and while removing the positive rear bolt of the alternator I'm guessing the nut (inside holding device) fell down inside of the alternator. As of right now just waiting to put the alternator back. I know this isn't anything special but I'll update once everything is back together.

Hooked up secondary alternator... Dead alternator. Put new alternator, battery and wires. No problems now :D

Not pbb, read it with less sarcasm in mind. Good job getting it sorted out! electrical stuff can be damn frustrating at times, and DC stuff can really throw out some weird symtoms when grounds and stuff are missing or bad.

Jeez I didn't think this was Pirate4x4... Or is it :doah:

lol, sorry man, wasnt trying to be a douche, that was more being goofy and giving you a pat on the back, not making fun of you. i came in to see if i could help, you had already sorted it out from what i skimmed over, so decided some levity was in order. welcome to the forum though. :wink1:

Definitely not Pirate. Folks around here are generally fun natured and laid back. The pirate behavior gets people banned around here.

The lounge, on the other hand, is another beast at times. :eek1:

Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the welcome, nice to know that there are some forums still around where people aren't a$$H@!e's!

Things were working great until my ghetto battery hold down decided to malfunction... Battery + Positive Wires + Metal Battery Hold Down + Broken Leg = :weld:+ :yikes:
